SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) – The Lackawanna County Children’s Library makes science fun for kids with its Curiosity Club, a free STEM program for students in kindergarten through third grade. Today, young scientists explored the sweet science of candy canes in a hands-on learning experience.
Kids experimented with baking soda and vinegar to make candy canes “dance,” tested how different liquids dissolve sugary treats, and even learned whether candy canes sink or float.
“This is a program that anyone can participate in; they don’t have to pay anything. We know that many schools don’t always offer the same things they used to. So it’s an opportunity for kids to learn different things in a fun way that they might not have been able to learn in school,” said Jenna O’Malley, early childhood program coordinator at the Lackawanna Children’s Library.
Classes are held every fourth Saturday of the month and only require a library card. Next month, the Curiosity Club will delve into the freezing points of water, with children trying their hand at indoor ice fishing.
