Kaelyn crews

Kaelyn Crews, a soon-to-be information technology major, always knew she would go to Mizzou. That was never a question, coming from a family of Tigers fans in the small town of Prairie Home, less than an hour from campus.

She chose to study information technology because of her passion for technology and programming. Over the past several years, she has been actively involved in the Mizzou Computing Association, connecting with others who share her enthusiasm.

After graduation, Crews will pursue a Master of Science degree with an emphasis in healthcare technology, using his experience and passion to help save lives.

Read on for a Q&A with Crews about his Mizzou engineering experience.

What made you interested in your specialty?

I have always loved computers. I have very fond memories of sitting in front of my family’s computer and playing games with my little sister on my shoulder. I always joke that I speak computers better than English and sometimes I think it’s true! What fascinates me most is the logic behind how computers work. There’s something very satisfying about breaking a problem down into smaller pieces, finding a solution, and seeing it all come together perfectly, like solving a puzzle.

As I learned more, I came to understand how programming and technology can be used to solve real-world problems. Whether it’s building software, optimizing systems, or even working on something as big as healthcare technology, the logic and structure of computing feels natural to me. It’s a field that constantly challenges me while allowing me to be creative; and that’s why I know I made the right choice.

What is your favorite thing about Mizzou Information Technology?

Extraordinary professors are not only incredibly knowledgeable, but they are also truly invested in the success of their students. They go above and beyond to make complex concepts understandable, encourage curiosity, and provide guidance inside and outside the classroom.

I also like how electives allow you to tailor your education to your interests. There is a very wide range of courses to choose from: from website development and application development to motion graphics and animation to cybersecurity and networking. Plus, the 4 certificates available in the program are a great way to stand out and get a head start once you graduate. It’s been exciting to shape my degree around the topics that inspire me the most.

What is your favorite Mizzou Engineering memory?

My favorite memories come from TigerHacks, Mizzou’s weekend hackathon. There’s nothing like the energy and excitement of spending 36 hours brainstorming, coding, and collaborating with a team to bring an idea to life. It’s a whirlwind of creativity and problem-solving, fueled by coffee, snacks, and the shared drive to create something awesome.

TigerHacks gave me the chance to connect with other students, learn new technologies on the fly, and push my limits. It wasn’t just about the projects we built, but also the teamwork, the late-night laughter, and the satisfaction of presenting something we created from scratch. These weekends are some of the most challenging and rewarding experiences I have had at Mizzou.

Why are you proud to be a Tiger?

I am proud to be a Tiger because of the sense of community and tradition that Mizzou embodies. From the school’s passionate spirit to the incredible opportunities the university offers, being a part of Mizzou means being a part of something bigger than yourself.

Mizzou has given me the chance to grow, both academically and personally, through the support of amazing professors, engaging classes, and the friendships I’ve made along the way. I am particularly proud to represent a university that values innovation and strives to empower its students to make a difference in the world. Being a Tiger means carrying these values with you wherever you go.

What’s next for you after graduation?

I plan to pursue my Master of Science degree with a focus on health technology. I’m passionate about using technology to make a meaningful impact, and healthcare is an area where innovation can truly change lives. My goal is to be part of the next generation of healthcare, working on solutions that improve diagnostics, treatments and overall patient care. This field combines my love for technology with the opportunity to make a real difference, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me.
