Dallas Cowboys strategist Dak Prescott thought about a lot of things since his 2024 season ended in Week 9 due to a torn hamstring.
That involves taking a look at the rest of the NFC and appreciating some of the high-level football played in the league. When asked Tuesday who his top NFC contenders were, Prescott named just one team as standing above the rest: 11-1. Detroit Lions. The reasons for his selection included the different ways they won with the quarterback Jared Goff throwing for as many incompletions as touchdowns in a few weeks (week 8 against the Tennessee Titans) or throw five interceptions (week 10 in Houston Texans). Detroit also made a strong impression when the Lions beat the Cowboys 47-9 in Week 6.
“Right now, I think it’s hard to look any further than Detroit,” Prescott told CBS Sports on Tuesday. “Obviously with the way they’re playing, the momentum they’ve carried from last year to this year with the team they’re putting together, they’re able to show up on the field. ‘They played us here at home (in Week 6) plays a role in choosing these guys. You look at this offense, you look at a team where the quarterback goes and puts up those numbers and has. two failures and six touchdowns or whatever and they win by. one Then they come back and the guy can throw five interceptions and the team still finds a way to win, it’s impressive for practice and for the whole team. So they have it right now.
Detroit is on pace for its best regular season in franchise history, just one win away from tying its most wins in a season (12, which they did in 1991 and 2023) . Their current 11-1 start is their best 12-game start to a season in team history, and their current 10-game winning streak is tied for the longest in Lions history, with a streak of 10 consecutive games in 1934. season.
The Lions also currently own the No. 1 offense (31.9 points per game) and No. 2 defense (16.9 points per game) this season. If they can improve that pace and bring their defense’s production to the top of the league, then they can expect to hoist their first Vince Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl champions at the end of the 2024 season. Only two teams since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970 have finished with the of the NFL No. 1 offense and No. 1 defense, according to CBS Sports Research. These teams were the perfect 1972 season Miami Dolphins and the 1996 Green Bay Packersboth of whom won the Super Bowl in their respective seasons.
