In June, the MHSAA will start another registration cycle while more than 9,000 officials are starting to register for the 2025-26 school year and their essential role in advancing our games.
During the majority of the 100 years of the MHSAA, the officials sent their registration and then waited for the arrival, by mail, of the annual uniform patch to affix and to carry for all events during the coming school year.
The patches date back to at least the school year of 1947-48, and for almost 40 years after a round patch with “MHSAA” at the top, “official” at the bottom and the year and “recorded” in the middle – with colors of the patch and the writing sewn of the year of year. A slight change for the 1985-1986 school year saw the addition of a representation of the state of Michigan at the center of the patch.
Then came an era featuring several changes from one year to the next, with different forms – ovals, squares, rectangles, diamonds and circles – and more colors joining the mixture while the year, the logo and the “registered official” words remained the dominant characteristics of the patch of each year.
In 2008-2009, the patch may experience its most important evolution-from that moment, the design was no longer modified. This school year, a circular “patch forever featuring these same elements – the image of the drawing state, the logo and the words“ registered ”have become the norm that continues today, but with some asterisks.
For swimming and diving, volleyball, softball and baseball – sports for which the officials wear collar or blue necklaces instead of traditional striped uniform – The Patch of officials has been changed into a horizontal MHSAA logo, red with a blue outline.
The other asterisk applies to the MHSAA finals – for championship events, those responsible receive a special patch to wear.
And for this 100th Birthday year, several officials received fixes that meant the celebration, to carry on the arm.
