Thousands of people gathered in Ottawa on Canada Day To mark the country’s 158th year since the Confederation.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, in his first official Canada Festival message, said the historic moment was a bet from the provinces that they would be “stronger together than they could be separated”.
“They were right. They became a new federation which has now become our strong, bilingual, multicultural and ambitious country,” he said in the pre-recorded message.
Carney continued by saying that in the years that followed, the history of Canada was marked by “inflection points” and that the country now faces another moment.
“The world is changing, the old friendships are failed, our economy is shaken by a trade war that we have not started,” he said. “Our values are tested by attacks on democracy and the freedoms to which we must resist.”
He continued by saying that as the world is changing, Canadians are united and underlined, the country would built a “Canadian economy”, a sentence used by Carney because the federal government has worked to reduce interpromincial trade barriers.

“I am particularly proud that in a world responsible for division, that we under the maple leaf considered our options and we decided not to separate and to fight, but to come together and to build,” said Carney.
“We are a country that is great because, in part, we know that we can be even better. We are a country that does things because they are right, not because they are easy. A people who consider kindness as a virtue, not weakness. And it’s time to build a Canada worthy of these values, a Canada worthy of its great people, a Canada for all time. ”
His remarks followed the performances of various artists, notably the interpreter of Mi’kmaw, Alicia Murrin, the singer Métis Andrian Turenne and the poet Inuit Taqralik Parridge, and an overview of the Canadian Air Force snowbirds.

Canadian Identity Minister Steven Guilbeault was also present and addressed the crowd before performances.

There is no other place like Canada and we all share a sacred duty to protect it.
“But Canada is much more than a place, that’s something we wear in our hearts with pride.”
