BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – Now that the gift wrapping is removed, some of us are getting ready to cross the return line. To make this process smoother, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving central and southern Alabama has shared essential tips to help you handle post-holiday returns stress-free.
Carl Bates, president of the Birmingham BBB, reminds consumers that it is essential to understand in-store return policies. It also notes that stores are not legally required to accept returns unless the item is defective or misrepresented.
“Post-holiday returns can be a source of stress if shoppers aren’t aware of the store’s policies,” Bates said. “By staying informed and planning ahead, consumers can manage returns more easily and avoid unnecessary frustration. »
Tips for Hassle-Free Returns
The BBB recommends these steps:
• Research retailers: Before shopping, check companies on BBB.org to see ratings, reviews and potential complaints.
• Understand store policies: Learn about return procedures, restocking fees, and whether the store issues cash refunds or store credit. Holiday return policies may differ, so always confirm.
• Check online policies: For online purchases, review return policies, including who covers shipping costs and whether in-store returns are allowed.
• Save receipts and packaging: Most returns require original receipts and packaging. Providing gift receipts with gifts can simplify returns.
• Act quickly and bring your ID: Return policies often have time limits. Don’t delay and have your ID ready, as it may be necessary for fraud prevention purposes.
Bates stresses the importance of showing identification and keeping receipts.
“We saw a lot of things brought back into the stores that didn’t belong to the people who were trying to return them,” Bates said. “Things that were stolen and then returned for cash or store credit that could be used for something else.”
Also, don’t expect cash if you don’t have a receipt. Many stores only give credit in the form of a gift card.
