A basic movement asks Americans to refrain from shopping with large retailers on February 28.

Gather here, a Stitch fair in Cambridge, closes in solidarity on Friday with the basic movement on a national scale calling for an “economic breakdown”.

“We recognize that all small businesses cannot make this decision … But we ask people to vote with their portfolio since we opened in February 2011 – to spend more in local businesses and support the small businesses of their communities because we store”, ” owner Virginia Johnson wrote in a Social media message.

The popular USA people direct the economic breakdown. It is a “basic movement dedicated to economic resistance, government responsibility and business reform”.

The group, which has no political affiliation, aims to unite the Americans against the greed of companies. John Schwarz founded it to raise awareness of the way the “system is rigged” against everyday Americans. The demonstration comes as many Americans have trouble The cost of living.

Johnson hopes to make a difference in recutation here by interrupting payments by credit card.

Johnson noted that 96% of the sales process in the store involves credit card companies. When a customer uses a credit card to the store, credit card companies invoice the retailers a small percentage of the total purchase price as exchange costs or scanning costs. In addition, the store uses credit cards to pay their suppliers.

“So we are going to stop the flow of costs for a day,” wrote Johnson.

“Does it make a difference?” asked Johnson. “Well, I believe that if enough people choose to avoid spending money on Friday 28, it will make a bump and show the people we can organize.”

Gather Cambridge here is not the only local company to support the cause. Lola coffee and more In Medford, will offer a 20% reduction to cash customers on Friday.

“I have the impression that people have a hard time in many ways,” said owner Pearl Brault on Thursday. “I see it in my customers and the purchasing powers of people who come here. If my community hurts, I feel that I should be part of it. »»

Brault says that, despite the potential impact on your business, it is important to share the message that “our families are in difficulty”.

“Our government and our people who manage our economy – they have not heard the voices of people who live the pay check at the pay check,” said Brault.

What is the economic breakdown?

The power failure requires consumers to avoid all unnecessary purchases in person or on the midnight of Thursday at midnight Friday.

“No Amazon, no Walmart, no better purchase,” explains the People’s Union USA website. “Nowhere!”

The website also urges consumers to avoid spending money from large retailers and using credit or debit cards to make unnecessary purchases.

The only exception is essential elements such as medicine, food and emergency supplies, which the organization recommends buying in small local businesses.

The Union USA people already provide for other targeted economic actions, including a week’s late breakdowns against specific retailers such as Amazon, Nestlé and Walmart.

In a Instagram video Published last week, Schwarz said that the power failure is supposed to show that large companies do not manage the economy, but that everyday consumers.

“For our whole life, they told us that we have no choice,” said Schwarz. “This is how things are. Whether we have to accept these foolish prices, the greed of companies, billionaire tax lounges while we have trouble fending ourselves, “he said.

Schwarz added: “For one day, we will finally turn the tables.”

Will it work?

The movement aims at consumer spending, the foundation of the American economy, which represents almost 70% of American GDP, according to the Federal Bank of the St. Louis reserve.

However, some criticisms say that stopping spending for a day will have no impact.

“Many people reject the idea, arguing that a day’s spending freezing will not move the needle for large companies or the wider financial system,” said Kevin Thompson, CEO of 9i Capital Group, investment advisor in Texas, said Nowsweek. “And I agree – it will probably have a minimal direct impact.”

“But what many ignore is the power of the idea,” continued Thompson. “The game book for this already exists – Montgomery, 1955, The Bus Boycott. If it is gaining ground, it could turn into something much larger, especially if people extend it beyond a single day. »»
