The new Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney said the country is in a “moment of crisis” because it is cluster with a trade war Launched by its nearest ally, the United States.

Carney, former Bank of Canada and Governor of the Bank of England, officially succeeded Justin Trudeau, who resigned from his post as Prime Minister earlier on Friday, during a test ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Governor Mary Simon presided over the ceremony, who also saw Carney reveal 23 cabinet ministers – a much smaller group than the Cabinet of Trudeau, which had 39 members, including him.

On Friday, at his first press conference as Prime Minister on Friday, Carney said that the “leaner cabinet” would be “action -oriented”, focused on the protection of Canadians in the face of “unjustified foreign trade actions”.

“The cabinet is much smaller because it focuses on the most important problems for Canadians, the meeting of the moment, and the moment is a moment of crisis,” said Carney.

Certain current ministers dealing mainly with the United States will retain their roles. These include the Minister of Public Security David McGuinty and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly.

Dominic Leblanc will remain Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and will also become Minister of International Trade, while his financial portfolio goes to Champagne François-Philippe, who is the new Minister of Finance.

Carney, who is not a member of the Parliament, should seek a seat in the House of Commons in a short time, and speculation is high that he could quickly trigger an early election.

He did not indicate whether a first election will be called, but said: “There will be other news in the coming days with regard to the fact that we have such a strong mandate that is necessary for the time.”
