What followed was a frantic, emotional and ultimately comforting journey, which highlights the power of the community, technology and a little luck.

A disappeared dog: the beginning of a frantic search
Michael’s story began with a simple act of confidence, leave Millie at the guard of a close friend. But as Michael recalls, “She was a little scared on the walk with him and slipped from her collar. It was in the East Village in New York, and she sort of took off. I think she was trying to find me or understand where I was.”
His friend hunted Millie for blocks, trying desperately to catch up, even trying to report cyclists and passers -by. But Millie, a mixture of rapid and determined pit-bull, had disappeared.
“He called me on the phone and was right, you know, in a way, like, breathless and panicking by saying, like:” Hey. Sorry, but, you know, that’s what happened. I can’t find it. “”
Michael turned immediately, returning directly to New York. He and his family searched the city until 2 a.m., visiting police and firefighters and publishing Facebook groups and lost PET websites.
“It was like looking for a needle in a haystack, especially in New York,” he said.

Rescue technology
The next morning, Michael’s mother downloaded information about the photo and micropuce from Millie to Petco Love LostA free and innovative platform that uses the correspondence of photos fueled by AI to bring the lost pets with their families together. In a few minutes, Michael received two alerts, one with an image match and another with a micropuce match. The two pointed out to an emergency veterinarian clinic in Paramus, New Jersey.
“It was fantastic. I had never heard of Something like this technology. This could not have worked better, “shared Michael.” Since she disappeared when I was able to find it, I think it was only thirteen and fourteen o’clock. So, yes, I mean, less than a full day of what happens, or her, you know, who withdraws me from the leash, bringing me together with her. “”

Millie Wild Travel
Millie’s adventure was as painful as they are miraculous. After traveling nearly ten miles from the East Village in Harlem, she was hit by a car. A good Samaritan stopped traffic, picked it up and led him to an emergency veterinarian in New Jersey.
The staff treated it for scratches, cuts and a leg injury and downloaded their information on the photo and the micropuce at Petco Love Lost, where the system of the system equaled it to Michael’s report.
“”The technology was great. All we had to do was download a photo of her, then we were able to be matching with her through this photo, and, a bit like the AI technology of her being associated, the veterinary group also downloads a photo of her. So, yes, I mean, it’s crazy technology these days and at what speed you know, people can end up with their pets, “said Michael.

How Petco Love Lost works
Aaron Klein, product director at Petco Love Lost, explained the magic behind the platform.
“Petco Love Lost uses photo correspondence technology to scan and instantly compare a photo of a lost pet or found in our massive and centralized pet database,” Klein said. “This includes photos of most animal shelters across North America, as well as platforms like Nextdoor Neighbors by Ring and Direct Posts of community members. Which took hours, looking for shelter websites, manifesting social media and bringing together information, is now done in less than a minute.
“The Petco Love Lost system automatically corresponds to pets on the basis of up to 512 data points, and as soon as you report your pet, we continue to monitor all incoming pets,” added Klein. “If we find a possible match, you will get a new SMS match alert and an email immediately, you never miss an advance. This automated approach in real time makes the meetings faster, more precise and less stressful for animal parents.”

The challenge of lost animals
Gathering pets lost with their families is a huge challenge, especially in a city as sprawling as New York. According to Klein, “the most difficult part to bring the lost pets together: first, get lost and find pet data in a single central place, and secondly, get everyone, that they have lost or found a pet, to really look at this place.”

With only 22% of the parents of animals who go to a refuge when a pet is lost, but 80% online research (often on a single platform), there are huge shortcomings in the research process. Petco Love Lost tackles this by connecting data sources to a consultable platform, including more than 3,000 shelters and the main social media networks, with plans to develop even more.

An emotional meeting
When Michael finally saw Millie in the veterinarian, it was a moment of pure relief and joy.
“It was a very emotional meeting, as for me,” he said. “I mean, I think the right thing, like, we gathered so quickly. But all night, the night she was missing, and I did not know where she was definitely, as one of the most difficult nights I had for a while. … There was definitely (tears). I was, you know, shouting like a baby not to admit it.”
