Alberta reports 19 new cases of measles, exceeding 500 confirmed infections

Alberta has seen more than 500 cases of measles since early March, as 19 additional cases of highly contagious disease have been confirmed.

All new cases except one are in the southern health zone of the province, which has 362 confirmed cases – more than 70% of all cases in Alberta.

In comparison, the Edmonton area had only six confirmed cases.

Government data show that almost 80% of the total Alberta cases have been reported in childrenincluding 157 in those under the age of five.

At the beginning of the month, 35 people were hospitalized and a spokesperson for Alberta Health said one is currently in intensive care.

Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, flowing nose, red eyes and a red and red rash that appears three to seven days after the start of fever.

The province encourages Albertans to be vaccinated against measles and has launched a hotline that people can call to Learn more about immune.
