Padilla incident increases more confrontation of immigration between Trump and Democrats
Senator Alex Padilla, D-Calif., Was forcibly removed from a press conference in Los Angeles after trying to question the Kristi Noem internal security secretary at a press conference related to immigration, Rebecca Shabad and Jacob Soboroff.
He marked the last climbing of the battle between President Donald Trump and the Democrats on the expulsion plans for the administration and the demonstrations that broke out in response.
The incident: “I am Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary,” Padilla told Noem, which prompted several men to push him physically out of the room.
The Padilla office shared a video of the incident with NBC News which shows that the senator was taken to a corridor outside and pushed his face forward on the ground while officers with FBI identification vests said to the Senator to put his hands behind. The officers then handcuffed him.
Addressing journalists later Thursday, Padilla said that he was receiving a briefing from military officials when he learned that Noem was in the same building and decided to join his briefing.
“If this is how this administration reacts to a senator with a question, if this is how the Ministry of Internal Security reacts to a senator with a question, you can only imagine what they do to agricultural workers, cooks, day workers in the Los Angeles community and throughout California and throughout the country,” said Padilla.
DHS replied on xwrongly claiming that Padilla “interrupted a live press conference without identifying.”
“Mr. Padilla was invited to retreat several times and did not comply with the repeated orders of the officers,” said the DHS, saying that the agents “thought he was an attacker and that the officers had acted in an appropriate manner. Secretary Noem met Senator Padilla after and held a 15 -minute meeting.”
How the Democrats replied: The incident caused a new indignation from the Democrats.
The head of the Senate minority, Chuck Schumer, Dn.y., denounced the incident on the Senate soil. “I just saw something that has spoken badly in the stomach-the mistreatment of an American senator. We need immediate answers to what happened,” he said.
Former vice-president Kamala Harris called the incident “a shameful and surprising abuse of power”.
How the GOP replied: Meanwhile, the Republicans have largely criticized Padilla.
“Padilla did not want any answers; he wanted the attention,” said the White House spokesman Abigail Jackson. “Padilla embarrassed and his voters with this immature and theater blow.”
Chamber Mike Johnson, R-La, called Padilla’s actions “madly inappropriate”, saying that they “reach the level of censorship”.
But senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, described the “very disturbing” episode, saying: “It seems that it is abused and physically removed and it is difficult to imagine a justification for that.”
How the “ big and beautiful bill ” would add fuel to the expulsion program of Trump
Jonathan Allen analysis
If you like the immigration test in Los Angeles, you will love the Bill on domestic policy Pending before the congress.
Although the measure would reduce spending on many weapons from the federal government, it would denounce more than $ 150 billion in border security, the application of domestic immigration and deportations.
This includes $ 75 billion for immigration and customs application alone. Firelessly decreasing, 8 billion dollars are intended to hire 10,000 additional ice and support staff, and nearly $ 900 million more are hidden in the legislation to give bonuses to recruits and ice agents who undertake to stay in their work for five years. The objective is approximately 50% increase in the size of the agency.
Trump’s allies expect that money for ice, which leads to workplace raids like those in question in Los Angeles, will allow the administration to strengthen its efforts to illegally apprehend immigrants who are in the country and try to follow the president’s promise to deport people by millions.
“If you want to do it on this scale – the required scale – you will have to have more people,” said Rachel Bovard, vice -president of political programs at the Partnership Institute, a non -profit organization closely aligned with the Trump agenda.
This happens in the context of disorder in Los Angeles, where Trump deployed the National Guard and navies in a nesting way to protect agents and federal goods. The guard is there to protect the ice from the demonstrators – some of which have been violent – and the Marines are there to protect the guard.
Californian officials opposed the workplace raids and the president’s decision to activate the custody without the consent of Governor Gavin Newsom, who continues to arrest Trump. Officials of the White House threatened to arrest Newsom and the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, if they violate laws to repel raids and military presence.
The battle between politicians became physical on Thursday when Senator Alex Padilla, D-Calif., Approached internal security secretary Kristi Noem at a press conference that she organized in Los Angeles. Padilla was forcibly removed from the room, pushed to the ground and handcuffed by federal agents after trying to ask Noem.
There does not seem to be an end to climbing. And although there is no way to predict the future, there could soon be enough money to make sure it looks very much like the current
