The brain tumor affects several people around the world each year and to raise awareness of the state and its related complications, World Day of Brain Tumor is observed on June 8 of each year.

Dr (Lt col) Harandeep Singh BRAR, principal consultant, neurosurgery, Fortis Hospital, Mohali, says that a brain tumor is abnormal cell growth in the brain or its coverage (meninges). “Brain tumors can be malignant (cancerous) or benign (non -cancerous). Only about one third (27.9%) of brain tumors are malignant. These can be classified as tumors of the primary SNC, from the brain or secondary tumors propagate cancers elsewhere in the body, ”explains Dr. BRAR.

Discussing the diagnosis of a brain tumor depended on the presence of clinical symptoms such as headache or crises, Dr. BRAR says that other related symptoms as well as neurological examinations and radiological examinations such as the NCCT (Tomodensitometry) of the head and an MRI contrast (magnetic resonance imaging) could help detect the disease.

There are many processing options, depending on the type of tumor, chemotherapy and radiotherapy can be used alone or as a complement to surgical management.
