Durham and Chapel Hill, NC – UNC Health and Duke Health, two of the best academic health systems in the world, unite to create a new children’s health system in North Carolina, featuring the first autonomous hospital of the ‘ State dedicated to children’s care.
The two institutions today filed statutes with the Northern Carolina State to establish NC Children’s, a private and exempt organization of tax 501 (C) (3). Plans for NC children have a 500 -bed children’s hospital, a children’s ambulatory care center and a children’s behavioral health center.
An autonomous children’s hospital in Northern Caroline was a decade for the two institutions. A first investment of $ 320 million in NC Children’s made by the North Carolina State at the start of 2024 advanced discussions for collaboration between the two entities.
The full campus of children’s health will be located in a site not yet identified in the triangle and will include a solid research and education business supported by the medical schools of the two universities.
The partnership aims to provide a higher volume of highly specialized pediatric care, allowing families of the whole state to stay in North Carolina when looking for complex care.

The partnership between the two health systems will allow each of the clinical teams to extend their clinical programs and research portfolios for existing children. The combined organization will create a destination for large pediatric over -parties, researchers, residents and scholarship holders.

The partners plan to embark on the new NC children’s campus by 2027, the construction of the campus which should take about six years.
Facts of NC children
- Campus: NC Children’s will include a campus of more than 100 acres in the triangle, anchored by a hospital of ~ 500 beds as well as a ambulatory surgical center, a medical office building and a behavioral health hospital. The campus will include play areas and rehabilitation facilities, translation research capacities with a dedicated innovation / collaboration area and mixed infrastructure including hotel potential, retail, catering, etc. .
- Organization: NC Children’s is an organization 501 (C) (3) private from Caroline du Nord.
- Services: UNC Health and Duke University Health System transfer all clinical services, programs and operations related to pediatrics to NC Children’s.
- Pediatric research and education: Pediatric research and education functions will remain with the UNC medical school and the Duke School of Medicine in the predictable future, although they can be carried out in formerly operational children, in particular education and Clinical research.
- Affiliations: NC Children’s will have perpetual academic affiliations with Duke and UNC medicine schools, as a pediatric hospital in the two organizations.
- Practice model: NC Children’s will develop a model of practice for suppliers of Duke and UNC, allowing them to keep their existing academic meetings. NC Children’s will have open medical staff, which means that qualified providers can request privileges, even if they are not affiliated with any of the two schools.
- Chronology: The hospital is expected to open its doors in the early 2030s. Other basic services such as the children’s behavioral hospital, the ambulatory surgery center or the medical office building can open several years earlier.
