University Park, Pennsylvania – Hazel Diaz, veteran of the American Marine Corps and former Penn State student, was appointed director of the New Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) in Penn State. The recently open center provides entrepreneurial development services to veterans, members of the active service service, members of the National Guard, reservists and military spouses of Commonwealth.
Le Penn State Vboc is the first Vboc of Pennsylvania focused only on the Pennsylvania.
In this role, Diaz will supervise the operations of the center, will consult the veteran entrepreneurs and direct the efforts to link the veterans of Pennsylvania, the soldiers of transition and the military spouses with entrepreneurial resources and opportunities.
“I am delighted to join this initiative and to continue to serve veterans across the Commonwealth, by helping them achieve their entrepreneurial objectives,” said Diaz. “Veterans combatants bring skills and unique perspectives to the business world, and I am passionate about allowing them to succeed.”
Thanks to his work in public policies, higher education and plea of veterans, Diaz provides vast experience in the support of veterans. As director of the Military Voices Initiative for Storycorps of NPR, she cultivated partnerships, managed programming and pleaded for veterans and their stories. More recently, she was an analyst in Commonwealth Economic Development at the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED), also demonstrating her commitment to community development and the impact.
“Hazel’s expertise and leadership will guarantee that this center becomes an essential resource for veterans across the Pennsylvania,” said James Delattre, vice-president associated with research and director of the Entrepreneurship and the Marketing at Penn State.
The creation of the VBOC in Penn State was made possible thanks to a competitive subsidy granted by the Small Business Administration of the United States (SBA). This subsidy will allow the University to provide entrepreneurial development services specifically adapted to the needs of the Pennsylvania veterans community.
“This partnership with Penn State reflects the dedication of SBA to support veteran entrepreneurs,” said Kelly Hunt, director of the SBA Pennsylvania district. “We are delighted to see Hazel bring his expertise and his passion to this role, and we are convinced that the Center and Hazel will be a transformative resource for the Pennsylvania veteran business community.”
