ALBUQUERQUE — Albuquerque business owners received much-needed help recovering from vandalism. The City of Albuquerque launched the Window Grant program on September 1, 2024, providing financial assistance to repair broken windows caused by vandalism.

The program, which ended on December 31, 2024, supported 87 business owners, covering the repair of 210 broken windows. In total, the City provided or committed $200,000 to help alleviate the financial burden of this damage.

“It was a great program,” said Rosalinda Castaneda, owner of Wigs, Wigs, Wigs. “The funds have been very helpful and I am truly grateful.”

A collaboration between the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) and the Economic Development Department’s Small Business Office, the initiative aimed to protect businesses and keep them open to the public. Participants expressed their thanks for the timely support of the program and many acknowledged that the funding helped them avoid further financial losses and maintain customer traffic.

“We will continue to find new ways to prevent crime and support those who fall victim to it,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Replacing these windows helps keep businesses open and ensure they have the resources they need to recover and continue serving our community.”

The grant reimbursed up to 80% of window replacement or repair costs, with a maximum of $5,000 per business. An additional $1,000 was available for those who incorporated “green” glass or environmentally sustainable safety glass into their repairs.

Participating companies were required to complete the APD Business Crime Prevention Security Survey. Meanwhile, APD’s Real Time Crime Center continues to help track criminals using more than 10,000 cameras located throughout the city. Officers have also increased their proactive patrols in areas with higher rates of vandalism.
