After Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president, he outlined some of the key priorities he planned to implement through decreesranging from expulsions and border controls to renaming the Gulf of Mexico.
Trump’s use of executive orders is not new: Executive orders are a tool that new presidents often use when they first take office.
Signed statements typically outline how the president wants the federal government to be run, through instructions to agencies, reporting requests and, in some cases, major policy reforms.
Here are some of the key executive orders Trump will sign on his first day.
Before his inauguration, Trump announced he would rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, something he made clear he planned to do with an order Monday.
According to the Associated Press, whether it will be able to make the change unilaterally is up for debate, and other countries are not obligated to comply with the U.S. decision.
The International Hydrographic Organization ensures that all seas, oceans and navigable waters of the world are surveyed and mapped in a uniform manner, although there are cases where countries refer to the same body of water under different names .
Trump added that Mount Denali, renamed by former President Barack Obama, would return to its original name of Mount McKinley after the 25th president.
Immigration and deportation
The president said he would sign an executive order to declare a national emergency at the U.S. border with Mexico.

“All illegal entry will be stopped immediately and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens to the places from which they came,” Trump said.
On top of that, Trump aims to end access to asylum, suspend the refugee program that the White House says forces communities to “house large and unsustainable populations of migrants,” ending birthright citizenship for children born in the United States whose parents do not have legal rights. immigration status and force asylum seekers to wait in Mexico.
He also said he would designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, while using the Alien Enemies Act to use federal and state law enforcement to “eliminate the presence of all foreign gangs and criminal networks that lead to devastating crime on American soil.”
This law allows the president to expel any non-citizen of a country with which the United States is at war.
Various economic and energy measures will also be put in place, including what the White House called “ending (Joe) Biden’s climate extremism policies.”
He plans to sign orders aimed at reducing energy prices and controlling inflation, including easing regulatory constraints on oil and natural gas production and declaring a national energy emergency to use all necessary resources to the construction of critical infrastructure, declared the White House in its outline of its project. “America first, priorities. »
“The inflationary crisis was caused by massive overspending and rising energy prices,” he said in his speech. “We’re going to drill, baby, drill.”
Ending the “Green New Deal” is also a priority he highlighted in his speech, which would include revoking what he called an electric vehicle mandate that was put in place under the now former president Joe Biden.
Although he was reportedly holding back his threat of tariffs against Canada and Mexico, Trump said he plans to tax and tax foreign countries “to enrich our citizens,” which will include creating of the External Revenue Service to collect tariffs, duties and revenues.
Customs duties are imposed by a government on goods entering a country and are paid by the importer, not the exporter. Some businesses may pass on the additional cost of a tariff to their customers.
Repeal rules on diversity and transgender rights
Under his administration, Trump said there would no longer be a government policy aimed at “socially integrating race and gender into all aspects of public and private life.”
He stated that he would make it the official policy of the U.S. government that there be only two genders, male and female.
On Saturday, he also told a rally that he would act on day one to end the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the federal government will also be ended by executive order, while a new White House official told Reuters he will sign an executive order during his first term to reduce efforts to address racial disparities in the workplace.
Trump also plans to order tens of thousands of federal employees to return to the office.
The White House said only six percent of federal employees are currently working on the job.
If those employees don’t return, Trump said in December they would be fired.
