Premier of Alberta Danielle Smith will not be to the president-elect that of Donald Trump After all, the inauguration ceremony will take place on Monday, due to the bitter cold expected Monday in Washington, DC.
Smith, who is spending five days in Washington as part of a diplomatic trip, was scheduled to attend the event.
But his press secretary, Sam Blackett, said in a statement that most ticketed guests will no longer be able to attend the ceremony in person because it will be moved inside the Capitol rotunda, and that includes Smith.
Blackett says the prime minister still plans to attend an event at the Canadian embassy on Monday.
Smith met with political leaders and energy industry executives in what the province sees as an effort to promote an “era of partnership.”
Earlier this week, Smith broke with his fellow premiers and the prime minister, refusing to sign a joint statement saying all countermeasures – including energy exports – were on the table when it came to to respond to Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on Canadian products.
