Missouri’s top military officer is about to change. Gov. Mike Kehoe chose Brig. Gen. Charles Hausman as next adjutant general of the National Guard.
Hausman will take over on February 1. He will replace Maj. Gen. Levon Cupton, who is heading overseas to continue serving the military.
General Hausman told Missourinet that the National Guard deals with “human affairs.”
“We want to make sure that we’re taking care of our people, bringing them in, both recruiting them, but also retaining them once they’re on the force. And then also building readiness for those missions – that’s what provides Governor Kehoe with an asset of trained and disciplined people at the governor’s disposal when needed,” Hausman said.
Whether it’s severe weather, civil unrest, border security or the COVID-19 pandemic, the Missouri National Guard serves the community in a variety of ways.
“When we do these emergency missions, the outpouring from communities is certainly incredible to see. But it really lets Soldiers and Airmen know that they are appreciated and that they are doing something important. So we appreciate that,” Hausman said.
As a seasoned aviation officer and combat veteran, Hausman served several overseas tours, including Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan. He has over 36 years of service in the Missouri National Guard and currently serves as Deputy Adjutant General of the Army.
The general explained what he brings to the table.
“You know, I’ve spent my whole life leading soldiers. And I will say that, you know, when I lead Soldiers, I have the opportunity to listen, I would like to hear and receive feedback and collaborate. And I think that’s probably one of our greatest strengths. If you want to be a good leader, you also have to know how to listen,” he said.
His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Master Aviator Badge.
Hausman is originally from St. Joseph and currently lives in Jefferson City with his family.
