New President Donald Trump on Thursday chose IBM research director Darío Gil as his nominee for undersecretary for science and innovation at the Department of Energy.
“Darío is a brilliant businessman and scientist, with a distinguished record as chairman of the National Science Council and senior vice president and director of IBM Research,” Trump wrote in an ad on Truth Social and republished on X, formerly Twitter. “He previously served on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology during my first term.”
Gil’s work at IBM focused on emerging technologies, namely artificial intelligence and quantum information sciences. He publicly spoken in support weightings of open source AI models, particularly in research and government work, portion He served on the President’s Advisory Council on Science and Technology of the first Trump administration and chaired one of its subcommittees, where he advocated for increased U.S. investment in emerging and critical technologies.
If confirmed, he is expected to serve under Trump’s nominee for Energy Secretary, Chris Wright, who is currently the subject of Senate confirmation hearings.
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna released a statement Thursday saying the company was “honored and supportive” of Gil’s selection.
“Dario is a great champion of science and technology as a catalyst for progress in the United States and around the world, and we look forward to supporting him throughout the confirmation process,” Krishna said. wrote on LinkedIn.
Gil, originally from Spain, received his doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT. He currently serves as chairman of the National Science Board – an agency that sets policy for the National Science Foundation and advises the president and Congress on science and engineering – to which Trump appointed him in 2020.
