PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. (WLOX) – Several books line the shelves at Pass Christian Books, a bookstore located just off Highway 90, mirroring the Mississippi Sound.

“We started really small, and it seemed to pick up and grow,” Scott Naugle said. “I learned a lot along the way.”

For nearly 24 years, Naugle has been a co-owner of Pass Christian Books, seeing it grow beyond measure.

“We got lucky and it grew. People often say to me, “My God, people read on digital devices.” Wonderful. The more people read, the better. I’ve never heard anyone say at the end of their life, “I’ve read too many books.”

After Hurricane Katrina, Naugle and his co-owner built the current store from the ground up and still operate there today. Since then, the goal has been to continue growing without ever losing tradition, while the store continues to expand its book collection. He also added a cafe.

Although some think working in a bookstore is a walk in the park, Naugle says that couldn’t be further from the truth. However, it is worth it.

“The books arrive on pallets from trucks. The books are heavy. We don’t have a forklift, but I often think we should have one because the books arrive at premises we rent a few hundred meters from here. All of these books need to be entered into the system and shelved. The work is very physical.

For Naugle, reading is an escape, and he will always strive to create a lasting experience at Pass Christian Books just for that reason.

Pass Christian Books is located at 300 East Scenic Drive. They are also found on Facebook.
