Kalamazoo senior among 300 students honored at prestigious national science competition

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A local student has been selected for a prestigious science and maths competition for high school students.

The Society for Science has announced the top 300 researchers in the 2025 Regeneron Science Talent Search.

Local student Aryaman Mishra, of the Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center, was selected for his project titled “Translating the American Sign Language Alphabet to English Using a New hand gesture recognition.

Each researcher, selected from nearly 2,500 applicants, receives an award of $2,000, with an additional $2,000 earmarked for their respective schools, officials said. A total of $1.2 million was awarded by Regeneron.

Researchers were chosen based on their research, leadership skills, community involvement, commitment to academics, creativity in asking scientific questions, and demonstrated exceptional potential as STEM leaders. through their projects, tests and recommendations.

The Regeneron Science Talent Search aims to recognize and empower our nation’s young scientists who are generating innovative solutions to solve important global challenges through research, according to officials.

On January 23, 40 of 300 researchers will be named finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, who will compete for more than $1.8 million in awards during a week-long competition in Washington, D.C., March 6-12 .

The Science Talent Search, or STS, recognizes talented high school students who have conducted original research projects and presented their results in rigorous reports for more than eight decades.

STS alumni have collectively received millions of dollars in scholarships and have gone on to found companies, publish research, and win Nobel Prizes, Field Medals, MacArthur Fellowships, and more.
