A group of plumbers from Langley, British Columbia, recently came together to help a family who needed some positive news.
Kelsey Carignan is only 38 years old. She’s a yoga instructor and mom to two young boys and just when she thought she had beaten breast cancerafter years of fighting, she learned that the fight had progressed to stage 4.
“At my five-year checkup, I found out that the cancer had actually come back and was in my liver and lungs,” she told Global News.
Then, last October, the family woke up to flooding in their house, which meant the entire house needed new pipes and their insurance didn’t want to pay for it.

“It costs between $35 and $40,000,” Carignan said. “Since I don’t work as much, it’s not something you drag around.”
But then the family woke up to a call on New Year’s Day that changed everything.
The British Columbia Plumbing and HVAC Association discovered the family’s plight, so several plumbing companies stepped in to pay the bill.
Spencer Turley of Murrayville Plumbing & Heating Ltd. said that when he made Carignan’s situation known, members of the association reacted immediately.
“When I found out the owner had cancer, it hit me because I also lost my mother when I was 25 to cancer,” said Colin Sadler of John Sadler Plumbing & Heating at Global News.
Carignan hopes she and her family will be able to return home in the coming months as she continues to battle cancer.
“It’s completely changed the dynamic of our household again,” she said, “where everyone is hopeful and eager to go home.”
