The United States will pay tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, died at age 100 on December 29. President Joe Biden declared on January 9 as a day of mourning in an executive order – the same day as the official funeral at the Washington National Cathedral.
Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy and President-elect Donald Trump told reporters he plans to attend the service. All flags will be flown at half-staff for the 30-day period following Carter’s death.
Many services, businesses and financial centers will operate as usual as this is not a federal holiday. But be sure to check the local store’s hours before you go.
THE last day of national mourning was held in December 2018 in honor of the late former President George HW Bush, who died at age 94.

Nasdaq will close all its stock and options markets on the national day of mourning. He will also observe a moment of silence at 9:20 a.m. EST in honor of the former president. The bond market will close at 2 p.m. EST, according to a recommendation of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
“We mourn the loss of President Carter and will close our U.S. markets on the National Day of Mourning to celebrate his life and honor his legacy,” Nasdaq Chairman Tal Cohen said in a statement.
The New York Stock Exchange will not trade and the American flag above the stock exchange will fly at half-mast.
The U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular operations on January 9, according to the National Postal Mail Handlers Union. The union noted that package deliveries could still be limited.
Chief Justice John Roberts on Thursday ordered the closure of the Supreme Court building. The court is not expected to sit that day, but it is approaching the deadline. January 19 deadline planned for TikTok to divest from its Chinese parent company – a federal law that the company has challenged in the Supreme Court.
