Bringing a newborn into the world is monumental for any family, but with the cost of living, buying everything that baby needs can be extremely expensive.

That’s why an Alberta-based charity Basically babies is experiencing a surge in demand for its hampers which include over a hundred items, including all the clothing a baby would need for the first year of life.

The baskets, called layettes, are color-coordinated and personalized according to the season of baby’s birth. Although they can cost up to $1,200 to assemble, they are distributed free to organizations that work with new mothers in need, many of whom live in shelters with their newborns.

“We allow these agencies to identify individuals or families who are in extreme need,” says Jennifer Brookman, director of operations in Calgary.

“They then request layettes…and bring them to the families.”

The organization serves most areas of Alberta and with the growing demand for services, they are seeking specific items including bedding, snowsuits and receiving blankets.
