Anaheim, California. – Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington will miss the rest of the 2025 season after being sidelined by an unpertified medical condition, the team announced on Friday.
What we know:
Washington, 73, the oldest active manager of Major League Baseball, has been far from the team for a week after having expressed breath and signs of fatigue during a road to New York Yankees who concluded on June 19. He returned to South California for a medical assessment and was placed on medical leave after a battery of tests.
The angels appointed the bench coach Ray Montgomery as an acting manager for the rest of the season. Infield coach Ryan Gois was promoted to fulfill the role of Montgomery on the bench.
Washington has 664-611 out of 10 seasons as manager of major leagues, including eight years with the Texas Rangers and two with the Angels. He led Texas to consecutive appearances of the World Series in 2010 and 2011, switching later in 2014. He returned to training with the Oakland Athletics and then joined the Braves of Atlanta, where he was third -based coach during his title race in the world series in 2021.

The background:
Washington was appointed Manager of the Angels before the 2024 season. Under their management, the team had shown signs of improvement, entering the Friday evening match against the Washington Nationals with a 40-40 file. The Angels had won three consecutive games and seven of their last 10, despite one of the longest droughts in the league, 10 seasons – and nine consecutive loser campaigns.
What is the next step:
Montgomery, 55, supports management tasks for the first time in the majors. A former Astros from Houston Astros, Montgomery, was previously director of scouting for diamondbacks and brewers. He joined the Angels Office Front in 2020 and moved to the canoe as a bench coach in 2021.
Gois, who played eight seasons in the majors, was hired by Washington as a team’s field before the 2024 season.
