Very Belvoir, Virginie (June 2025) – in the Letter to force: army transformation initiativeReleased on May 1, Dan Driscoll, army secretary, and General Randy George, chief of staff of the army, mentioned how the battlefields changed quickly and how “adaptation is no longer an advantage – it is a survival requirement”.

Army researchers and technical experts at Command of the American army, control, communications, computers, cyber, intelligence, surveillance and recognition (C5ISR)are dedicated to the development of technology and equipment to increase these chances of survival. The objective of the center is to ensure that the American military forces have the capacity to see, feel, communicate and move more quickly than almost peers adversaries.

In accordance with our military forces with the capacity to “see and communicate”, the Center has adapted and improved fifth generation wireless network technology, more commonly known as 5G. The improvement of 5G capacities will strengthen network resilience in a theater of operations, by invalidating continuous operations with minimum disturbances or failures. In addition, 5G is much faster than its predecessors, more stable and secure. 5G also has a shorter data processing of data between networks – this delay is known as latency.

“On the battlefield today, soldiers, vehicles and equipment are often distributed over large distances,” said Beth Ferry, director of the C5ISR Center. “The army must ensure that its units remain interconnected despite the austere conditions, the environmental and geographic challenges, or the interference of the enemy forces. The low latency and the high reliability of 5G networks would guarantee that the combat and support teams remain connected and can communicate without delay or abandoned signals. ”

5G technology has generalized commercial availability since 2019. The C5ISR Center is at the cutting edge of the adaptation of 5G technology for tactical use, while working alongside the industry, since 2020. Improved wireless 5G technology that the C5ISR center adapts, gives the army and its war fights a necessary increase in its cellular capacity.

The 5G amplified tests of the C5ISR Center will help the army reach its next level of network connectivity. With the increase in the number of soldiers who go to the American-Mexican border and the increase in world conflicts, advanced connectivity becomes a necessity.

“Our goal is to improve the network by taking advantage of commercial technologies,” said Mike Piesesen, head of the C5ISR Center 5G. “Where cellular really shines, it is by its scalability and latency. While we bring more robotics and autonomous platforms in the same area, and the spectrum becomes more congestioned, the high spectral efficiency of 5G becomes critical.”

To follow emerging technology and keep a head start on army opponents, scientists and engineers with the C5ISR Center survivable and surviving command team began to experiment with 5G technologies to improve its secure commandment systems and remain less detectable.

“We can use the commercial networks in place when we think the network is reliable,” said Piussen. “There is an important concept of” hiding at sight “with regard to 5G. As cellular networks are becoming more and more omnipresent, the commercial signals of the electromagnetic spectrum (EM) become more common and modified military signals can become more perceptible. ”

The C5ISR Center has implemented additional security features and networks protection to allow army users to be less sensitive to opponents on commercial networks.

In the coming months, the C5ISR center will experience, will test and refine its 5G capacities during the network modernization experience 25. The center will strive to use current infrastructure to minimize costs. Once the center establishes a mature 5G capacity, this improvement would allow more connected devices with a faster real -time data processing.

“What we want to do is try to use existing infrastructure wherever we go, if we can do so safely and safe,” said Piussen. “So that helps if we can take advantage of what is already there, but we will also bring our own private cellular network. By doing this, it offers the best of both worlds where you can get the universal coverage that people expect.”

By incorporating more 5G technologies into army operations, this upgrade could increase the reliability of communication and potentially reduce the limits of bandwidth, speed and security – establishing network resilience in the army. In addition, 5G improvements would allow real -time collaboration between terrestrial units, improving the awareness of the situation and would ensure a secure and secure transmission of critical data over long distances, which can in turn improve the lethality of soldiers.

“Some technologies allow us to create links between them, and not just mobile phones. We can have vehicles, drones, sensors or even soldiers in motion,” said Piussen. “You can do a lot with 5G and cellular, in terms of scale saving for pocket computers that you may not be able to do with more traditional tactical systems.”

If an infrastructure does not exist, do not worry, the center has also covered. The organization can bring its own. “We can take advantage of the same basic basic technology to bring this transparent wireless capacity where it is necessary the most tactical point,” said Piussen.

The advancement of 5G technology with high -speed data transmission could provide an essential capacity to organizations around the world. Having improved capacities could allow unmanned air systems and unmanned land vehicles to operate effectively and effectively in a multi-domain operation.

“Cellular industry is investing about $ 100 billion a year in improving 5G / 6G technology,” said Piussen, “the government cannot follow this level of commercial investment, but we can take advantage of it by implementing 5G where it makes sense.”
