Dewitt, NY – The Dewitt Wegmans store is one of the four Wegmans in New York chosen to test the new technology of smart basket.

Friday, the shopping carts, which will be deployed for the use of customers in the Dewitt store, will allow buyers to scan their items using a device integrated into the basket. They can then take the articles.

When they arrive at the checkout, everything they have to do is pay them.

Intelligent test and learning pilots take place in three other New York Wegmans – Perinton and Pittsford locations in Rochester and Alberta Drive in Buffalo, Evelyn Ingraham told Wegmans. Two different technologies suppliers are tested, she said.

Intelligent carts are “technology at an early stage which, in our view, could be offered to our customers as an alternative way to shop in our stores in the future,” said Ingraham.

The pilots are designed to allow customers to try them and provide comments to the channel, which can then make improvements or locate faults or gaps.

The goal is to see if the technology is well suited to Wegmans and if customers love it, she said.

Employees and certain customers have already tested carts at the Dewitt store, officials said. Now the public can test them.

The carts have a touch screen by the handle and tells the buyer to scan the barcode of the articles on the sensors. If there is a beep and a green light, the customer can take the article.

Wegmans abandoned its “scan” application in 2022 where customers could scan items using their own phone. The officials said There were too many losses of the program.
