Rowe and others came to the meeting of the Iron Mountain public school board of directors on Tuesday to support tennis and high school golf programs.
The board of directors suspends the two programs for the 2025-2026 school year, after the sports committee recommended it.
The board of directors says that the student body is not large enough to offer so much sports.
During the meeting, the president of the sports committee, Lisa Carollo, said that athletes practicing two sports during the same season could risk the two programs.
“Although this flexibility has helped fill the team lists, it has also led to planning conflicts, an incoherent frequentation of the team and significant pressure on students and coaches,” said Carollo. “In some cases, the absence of only one or two athletes can prevent a team from participating.”
Golf coach Varsity Iron Mountain, Steve Flaminio, said the golf team has a small financial impact on the school.
“I think that from a cost point of view, it is really not a sport dear in terms of school,” said Flaminio. “I want to congratulate the Pine Grove Country Club; They left Iron Mountain and Kingsford to play and train there for free all golf season. ”
Iron Mountain’s university tennis coach Keith Huotari said that he feared that the suspension of a year could harm the program in the future.
“I know that the board of directors has difficult work,” said Huotari. “They have a very difficult job and I respect what they do. I do not believe that the suspension of the program, even for a year and that re -evaluating, will do anything. Because you start from scratch and once you take a program, suspend it, take it, for me, it’s out of sight, out of mind. “
Some members of the board of directors have suggested that they are more closely examining the two programs, but for the moment, the suspension remains.
