Lake Elkhart, Wisconsin – The New Indycar The vehicle to make its debut in 2028 will be lighter with a more powerful engine.
These features were expected because Indycar published some details on the new car. The teams, however, hoped that it could be deployed in 2027. The current car has been used since 2012, with various additions such as Aeroscreen and hybrid.
The new car will be 85 to 100 pounds lighter than the current car, which varies from 1,635 to 1,785 pounds – depending on whether it is in a speedway or road route. The new engine will be a 2.4 -liter double turbocharger engine, which should have more power than the double turbocharger engine of 2.2 liters and V6 currently used. Hybrid technology will continue.
“The new car will obviously be safer,” said Penske Corp., Roger Penske, a few weeks ago in Detroit. “He should be lighter. He should be able to participate in the road race without having this bubble between cars. And that should be faster.”
Indycar will continue to use many main suppliers: Dallara to build the chassis, XTRAC for transmissions and the PFC for the brakes. Engines suppliers? These are still in the air, because Chevrolet and Honda were only signed in 2026.
“Recent important recent updates of the car – from Aeroscreen to the hybrid power unit – have helped to advance the need for a whole new car,” said Indycar president Doug Boles, in a press release. “We are satisfied with what our engineers and Dallara have designed in collaboration and believe that it will appeal to fans and paddock, while respecting our standards of security and improving the competition on the Indycar track to the future.”
Indycar says that in -depth tests on the track will start at the beginning of 2026.
