Invite brief

  • G7 leaders have published a joint declaration which undertakes to coordinate international efforts to advance quantum technologies through research, marketing and security.
  • The agreement describes measures to stimulate public and private investments, develop a skilled workforce and promote inclusive participation in quantum development.
  • The G7 will form a joint working group on quantum technologies to guide cooperation on standards, risk management and future applications in the civil and defense sectors.

G7 nations leaders promised coordinated action to shape the future of quantum technologies, identifying them as essential for economic growth, national security and global innovation. THE joint declarationPublished on June 17 at the G7 2025 leaders summit in Kananaskis, Canada, describes a shared vision to promote research, building international trusted markets and ensuring the ethical development of quantum IT, detection and communications.

The announcement indicates that quantum technologies – formerly considered to be long -term scientific activities – are increasingly moving in the field of strategic infrastructure and short -term marketing. The G7 countries are now positioned to lead in an area that could reshape sectors ranging from health care and agriculture to finance, logistics and defense.

G7 leaders have called the transformer advantages – as well as considerable threats – of quantum technologies.

“We, the G7 leaders, recognize that quantum technologies – which include IT, detection and communications – have the potential to provide important and transformer advantages to companies around the world,” the leaders wrote in their declaration. “Important R&D breakthroughs over the past decade mean that these technologies are now proven to create economic and social advantages in sectors such as finance, communication, transport, energy, health and agriculture while approaching global challenges. They could also have large -scale implications for national and international security, as they allow new defense capacities and threaten current data protection systems. ”

Academic, industrial and government partnership

Overall, the Declaration has a commitment to public and private investment in quantum R&D, supporting partnerships between the academic world, industry and government to accelerate marketing. G7 leaders have recognized that substantial scientific progress over the past decade have placed quantum systems at the forefront of practical utility. By identifying applications in areas such as secure communications and high -precision detection, the group aims to stimulate new markets while managing emerging risks.

Managers have also agreed to promote the inclusion and development of talents, especially in women and historically under-represented communities. Preparation for labor is considered a key constraint in the growth of Quantum. The group has approved policies such as learning, STEM education and mentoring programs to guarantee that the needs of the sector’s work are met both in technical and leadership roles.

Another key pillar of joint vision is a call for stronger protections around sensitive quantum technologies. While approving open science and international collaboration, the declaration also warns against intellectual property leaks and calls for mechanisms to preserve technological security through national borders. This includes the development of trust ecosystems among countries sharing the same ideas, where standards and interoperability can be advanced without compromising national interests.

Next cybersecurity upgrades

In addition to economic and educational measures, the G7 has also recognized the urgent need to upgrade cybersecurity in anticipation of future quantum threats. Many today’s encryption systems could be vulnerable to quantum compatible decryption, and G7 managers are committed to promoting the development and adoption of quantum resilient security solutions. These may include a post-auntum cryptography or a distribution of quantum keys, which are both tested in deployments at an early stage.

The joint declaration does not offer binding regulations, rather promoting international dialogues based on scientific evidence and democratic values. Given the early stage of technology, managers have considered that a global regulatory framework would be premature, although they have encouraged cooperation through policies dialogue, the establishment of standards and voluntary joint projects.

To guide this cooperation, the G7 will establish a joint working group on quantum technologies. The group will bring together government agencies, industry stakeholders and university experts to coordinate on research priorities, assess economic and defense applications and exchange best practices. The initiative widens previous efforts at the national level and indicates the formation of a multinational platform for strategic quantum coordination.

Collaboration of national measurement institutes

Technical validation will also be supported by a more in -depth collaboration between national measurement institutes. The leaders distinguished the NMI -Q initiative – an international framework for measurement and quantum tests – as a channel to ensure the consistency of equipment and protocols.

The unified position of the G7 arrives during the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, a designation intended to raise public awareness and encourage global cooperation in the field. It also reflects an increasing geopolitical emergency to shape the rules, standards and market conditions that will define the future of quantum.

They conclude: “During this international year of quantum science and technology, we will work together and with partners sharing the same ideas to make concrete progress in this program.”
