Hampden-Sydney College announces the appointment of Gary Ometer As vice-president of business and finance, as of July 15, 2025.
Ometer is currently a financial director of VPM Media Corporation and the Virginia Foundation for Public Media in Richmond, Virginia, where he oversees the financial operations of these organizations. Before VPM, Ometer was a financial director of Virginia College Savings Plan for 11 years, where he was responsible for financial operations for the largest university savings plan in the country. From 2000 to 2006, he worked as an investment banker at BB & T Capital Markets (BB & TCM), serving localities and educational establishments in Virginia. In July 2022, Ometer was appointed president of the Virginia College Building Authority by Governor Youngkin.
“We are delighted to find a new vice-president for business and finance, which has both the expertise in financial management and the extent of the experience Gary brings to the college,” explains Hampden-Sydney, president Larry Stimpert. “We look forward to everything he will contribute.”

Ometer holds a Baccalaureate of Sciences in Business Administration with concentrations of finance and accounting of Ohio State University. Ometer is a certified public accountant (CPA) and an approved global management accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Virginia Society of CPA. He received the Virginia CFO Prize from the year 2013 of the Virginia Business Magazine in the category of small non -profit organizations / government agency.
Ometer is also a member of the Round Table Steering Committee for Virginia Commonwealth University controllers (VCU) and the VCU School of Business Accounting Advisory Council. He also sat on the board of directors of the association for the preservation of antiquities in Virginia. He graduated from the Virginia Executive Institute and during BB & TCM, he obtained his license as general representative of securities (series 7 and 63) through the NASD.
Ometer and his wife, Karin, resident in the county of Henrico with their Shih Tzus. He likes fly fishing, cycling, gardening and reading. Karin is an accomplished tennis player who is currently the tennis coach of the university boys and the program manager at the Collegiate School in Henrico.
