European Union Officials say Canada is likely to sign a defense Supply contract with the continent when Prime Minister Mark Carney goes to Brussels later this month.

Carney is expected to visit the administrative capital of the European Union on June 23 for the Summit of Canada-EU, where he will meet the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the president of the European Council António Costa.

On Sunday, during the G7 summit in Alberta, the two EU leaders said that Canada’s participation in European defense architecture was to deepen.

Von der Leyen said Canada will sign a security and defense partnership with the EU, which will allow it to join a European loans for joint defense projects.

“Canada is a key partner in our transatlantic alliance. And we are looking forward to a great interest in the next summit between the European Union and Canada that we will welcome in two weeks in Brussels, ”said Costa.

Von Der Leyen said that the safe program can be joined by “allies, friends and partners very close to Europe and this month will allow negotiations on the introduction of Canada in the program.

Ottawa sought to join the European Union on Defense while US President Donald Trump continues to question the future of the NATO military alliance.

Trump said Washington will not necessarily defend NATO allies, which analysts have called a threat that undermines the whole point of the alliance.

Canadian officials have sought to reduce their dependence on American equipment – especially since Trump thought in March to sell allies “attenuated” fighter aircraft with less capacity than American planes.

In March, the European Commission unveiled Rearm Europe, a plan that would affect up to the equivalent of $ 1.25 dollars for the defense over five years.

It is a loan program that allows member states to take more debts to spend in defense without triggering EU restrictions on members with excessive deficits.
