The opinions of users of politics, experiences on the site differ by the party

X (formerly twitter) a renowned,, Deputy to some of its content rules and has made other radical changes since Elon Musk bought the platform In 2022. In the midst of these quarters of work, the Republicans saw the social media platform much more positively than the Democrats.

Below, we explore the following questions:

How we did that

Pew Research Center made this analysis as a continuous effort to explore the views of X (formerly known as Twitter) among the users of the site. This study aims to show how these views have changed over time.

For this analysis, we interviewed 5,123 adults from February 24 to March 2, 2025. All those who participated in this survey are a member of the American Trends Panel (ATP) of the Center, a group of people recruited by the national and random sampling of the residential addresses who agreed to take investigations regularly. This type of recruitment gives almost all adults a chance of selection. The interviews were conducted online or by phone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the American adult population by sex, race, ethnic, partisan affiliation, education and other factors. Learn more about ATP’s methodology.

How do users assess their experiences on X?

Overall, 37% of X users claim that their recent experiences using the platform have been mainly positive, according to a Pew Research Center survey from February 24 to March 2.

A statistically equal part of users (40%) describe their recent and neither positive nor negative experiences. 23% additional say that their experiences have been mainly negative.

Political party opinions

The majorities of both parties say that their recent X experiences have been mainly positive or neutral. However, republican and republican X users are more likely than democratic and democratic users to report optimistic experiences on the site. About half of the Republican users (51%) describe their time as positive, compared to 20% of Democratic users.

Democrats on the platform are more likely that Republicans say that their recent experience has been mainly negative (40% against 11%).

However, similar shares of republican users (38%) and democrats (41%) say that their experience on X is neither positive nor negative.

Opinions by race and ethnic

White adults on X are distinguished by saying that their experience on the platform today has been mainly positive. About four white X users in ten (41%) say that higher than Hispanic (36%), black (29%) and Asian (28%). The sharing of Hispanic, black and Asian users who say that this is not statistically different from each other.

Do users think that X leaning conservative or liberal?

More X users say that the site promotes conservative opinions on liberal opinions, but this is even more common among Democrats. Overall, 31% of X users think that the platform tends to take care of conservative opinions on liberal opinions. Much less – 5% – according to X takes more liberal views, while 38% say that it supports the two sets of views as well. Additional 26% is not safe.

Political party opinions

Few users of one or other of the parties believe that the site takes care of liberal opinions on conservative opinions. But points of view differ on the fact that X supports the conservatives on the liberals or treats the two groups equally.

Among X users:

  • 55% of Democrats say that X supports conservative opinions on liberal opinions, against 13% of Republicans.
  • 56% of Republicans believe that the platform also supports liberal and conservative opinions, compared to 16% of Democrats.

How do users see X’s impact on American democracy?

The share of republicans on X who say that the platform is mainly good for American democracy increased from 17% in 2021 to 58% today.

Meanwhile, fewer republican users than 2021 say that the platform is mainly bad for democracy (60% in 2021 against 11% in 2025).

The opinions of democrats have evolved in the opposite direction. The share of democrats on X who say that the platform is good for democracy has increased from 47% to 17% in the past four years. At the same time, 53% of democratic users now say that X is bad for democracy, much higher than the 28% in 2021.

The actions of the two parties who say that X does not have an impact on American democracy have remained relatively stable in the past four years. In 2021, approximately a quarter of each of the republican and democrats of X said that, and about three in ten in each party say it now.

How do X users visualize the platform environment?

Musk was a Vocal advocate for the protection of freedom of expression on the site and Reinstation of certain prohibited users. But Critics have raised concerns This disinformation and harassment could be uncontrolled on the platform under Musk.

In 2021, a similar share of republican and democrats said that inaccurate or misleading information on X was a major problem. By 2023, democratic users were more likely than republican users to say (68% against 37%).

Today, the gap has expanded to nearly 50 percentage points.

We have also questioned users about harassment and abuses, as well as the tone or civility of discussions on X. The shares that say that these are major problems on the platform follow a model fairly similar to misleading information. Where we saw Republicans and Democrats more in the peer in 2021, we now see large divisions.

The opinions of Republicans and Democrats on X -prohibition users have moved to the opposite direction of each other. In 2021, republican users were much more likely than democrats to see it as a major problem (61% against 6%). In 2023, the gap has shrunk and today, a larger share of Democrats than the Republicans on X said it is a major problem (33% against 18%).

Likewise, republican users were more concerned than democrats in 2021 about X limiting the visibility of certain positions. But Democrats are now more likely than Republicans to say that this is a major problem.
