Lansing, Michigan (WJMN / WBUP) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Lieutenant -Gouverneur Garlin Gilchrist II proclaimed June as the month of pride, celebrating resilience and contributions from the LGBTQ + community of Michigan.

“The month of pride consists in celebrating identity, the edifying community and supporting themselves with LGBTQ +Michiganders,” said Governor Whitmer. “We have made historical progress together … But we know that there is more work to do.”

Lieutenant-Governor Gilchrist stressed the importance of inclusiveness, declaring: “We must continue to raise their voices, protect their rights and ensure that Michigan is a safe and welcoming place for all.”

Governor’s administration Whitmer said he took measures to protect LGBTQ + rights, in particular by establishing an LGBTQ + commission on the state level and modifying the Elliott-larsen civil rights law to strengthen protections against discrimination.

The month of pride, according to Raúl Hernández-Guzmán, president of the LGBTQ +commission, is a moment to honor collective force and resilience.

“In Michigan, Pride means kissing the whole spectrum of who we are,” said Hernandez-Guzman. “This means raising our fearless veterans LGBTQ +, honoring our tribal and Amerindian communities with two spirits, standing to the ally with our immigrant and queer refugee neighbors, and asserting the dignity and the value of our transgender and non -binary community.”

Various representatives of the State echoed the feeling, stressing the importance of recognizing the roots of pride in the struggle for dignity and equality and the need to resist current political attacks against LGBTQ +rights. They celebrated the courage of the community and reaffirmed their commitment to fight against discrimination.

The state senator Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) has thought about the roots of pride, noting: “While we are facing renewed attacks … We are reminded that the month of pride has not started as a celebration but as a liberation from sectarianism.”

The representative of the state Noah arbitration (D-West Bloomfield) highlighted the current difficulties, adding: “This year, Michigan will observe pride by the resistance … Michigan will continue to show the way.”

Representative Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor) pointed out: “The month of pride is a powerful reminder that we are no longer alone as LGBTQ +people.”

Erin Knott, executive director of Equality Michigan, underlined the continuous struggle for equality, declaring: “While transgender people and people living with HIV are faced with serious threats to their health care, pride is the time to double our commitment to the fight for complete equality and civil rights.”

While the celebrations begin, the heads of state said that the recognition of this month hoped to underline the importance of solidarity and resilience in the face of adversity.
