Apple products transform care at Emory Healthcare
At the Emory Hillandale hospital, the Apple products ecosystem – subsequently propelled epic health care applications – increases the care of the patient and the patient experience
At the Emory Hillandale Hospital in Lithonia, in Georgia, Apple products are now the standard, marking a first technological transformation in its kind for clinicians and patients. Propelled by the availability of Epic systems On Mac, Emory Healthcare introduced Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch through the Emory Hillandale hospital, allowing clinicians to work more efficiently and stay connected with their teams, from anywhere.
“We are not only changing technology, we are changing a culture,” said Ravi I. Thadhani, MD, MPH, Executive Vice-President of Emory University Health and Executive Director of Woodruff Health Center in Emory. “Emory Healthcare redefines both the patient and the clinician with a more efficient and intuitive process focused on technology.”
Apple products like iPhone and iPad have unlocked new levels of mobility, efficiency and collaboration for clinicians, leading to better patient experiences and satisfaction. The introduction of Mac through the Emory Hillandale Hospital replaces its inherited devices and marks a brand new chapter for the health care industry.
“As a clinicians, we join a deep commitment to serve those who need it,” explains Vikram Narayan, MD, assistant professor of urology at Emory University and urological oncologist at Emory Healthcare. “But the reality of the provision of health care is intrinsically complex and multifaceted. In the whole of the industry as a whole, the administrative burden, combined with a workforce in narrowing, leads to an increase in the professional exhaustion of front-line workers. ”
“By integrating EPIC into Mac at Emory Hillandale hospital, we show the world how to adopt technology to improve workflow for clinicians so that they can continue to put patients first,” said Dr. Thadhani.
To mitigate part of this administrative charge, laptops and office computers at the 100 -bed hospital were replaced by Mac computers executing EPIC. Nursing stations are equipped with the iMac and Mac Mini, and doctors can manage patient care trips wherever they are thanks to MacBook Air portability.
Care teams are able to access the data specific to the patient – such as allergies, precautions and other relevant information – using a magnetically attached iPad outside each patient room. This improves communication and coordination between care teams as a information indicated in the ipad updates in real time. In addition, each nurse and doctor receives their own iPhone to stay connected, and doctors use Apple Watch to meet patients more quickly as they arise. For example, notifications for critical laboratory results of the EPIC Limerick application can be viewed in real time directly on their wrist.
“I can stay up to date with my patients in a way that was not possible before,” said Rashida La Barrie, MD, hospital and medical director of the use at Emory Hillandale hospital. Being able to pass between iPhone and Apple Watch to receive notifications helped Dr. La Barrie to stay connected, no matter where it is, which ultimately leads to better care of its patients. “Health care has historically been slow to adopt technology, which, I think, is such an error. We can use technology to provide better and more effective treatments, especially now for our patients. ”
Before the deployment of Emory Hillandale, Emory led a concept proof program at Emory Saint Joseph hospital. After deploying the iMac, MacBook and iPhone for use shared by the nurses and approved clinicians, the satisfaction of the care team increased and the retention of nurses remained solid. Nurses and clinicians have cited improvements such as faster connection time with Apple devices, ease of documentation and less eye training with High Resolution IMAC retina. Additional research on the efficiency of the documentation, led by Dr. Narayan of Emory, has revealed that the combination of Apple technology with the ambient documentation EPIC and Abridge allows it to save on average two hours a day compared to inherited systems.
In addition, Apple devices help improve the experience of patients hospitalized with the mychart bedside application on iPad. Each patient bed is equipped with an iPad so that patients can have easy access to their medical records, consult their care plans, order meals and communicate with their care teams, which allows them to remain committed with their health.
“The technology we use today in Emory Hillandale has improved workflows for our nursing staff as a whole,” explains Edna Brisco, MSN, RN, vice-president of patient care services and nursing chief at Emory Hillandale hospital. “Mac allows nurses to spend more quickly in their day, while the iPad provides important health information at the end of our patients. It is a game changer for the way we provide care. ”
