Economic officials of San Jose want to allow the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages outside the most popular squares and streets in the city center during the main sporting events of next year.
With economic impact from 2026 FIFA World Cup And Super Bowl 60 In Santa Clara, nearby, the San Jose municipal council voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve the designations of “entertainment zone” in six locations in the city’s business districts. Sports fans will be able to buy and consume alcoholic beverages “take away” during world cup surveillance evenings in San Pedro Street, post Street, the Sofa districtLittle Italy, Fountain Alley and Pasteo de San Antonio.
“We pilot and focus on the city center to learn, then we can extend it to other regions,” said Mayor Matt Mahan to San José Spotlight. “But we want to do things in some key areas that are already ready for this type of event.”
Entertainment areas can only be active during the authorized special event hours – from 8 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. alcoholic beverages should be sealed in non -metallic and non -metallic containers and cannot be taken in other establishments.
City officials said they chose the six areas because of their established cultural and commercial identities, the concentration of alcohol license, environments adapted to pedestrians and the history of the organization of successful special events.
“This flexible approach improves the city’s ability to support major events, lead commercial districts and create memorable public experiences that strengthen San Jose’s position as a dynamic destination,” said Lee Wilcox, deputy director of the city.
During the meeting, the member of the district council 5 Peter Ortiz proposed adding East San Jose shopping centers along Rock Alum avenue. But Mahan said he did not want to extend entertainment areas beyond the city center until they see the results of the pilot program. Ortiz said that East San Jose communities should not be ignored in political discussions surrounding Latin predominance sporting events.
“I have no opposition,” said Mahan to San José Spotlight. “My concern is whether each member of the council suddenly wants to have five in their district.”
The members of the Council finally voted to add the future of East San Jose “Avenida»Cultural district to the list of entertainment areas. East San Jose organizers can still have benefits of the entertainment area by requesting a special event permit, said Michael Mulcahy, member of the District Council.
“I don’t think all of this prevents rock alum rock,” he said at the meeting.
Sofa district The owner of the Pete Be music room said that city officials told him, as well as owners of neighboring companies, entertainment areas. He said he wanted to see the areas activated not only for the world cup surveillance evenings, but for all the main sporting events to increase the popularity of San Jose as a nightlife destination.
“The mayor is looking for an experienced economy, which means even more bodies in downtown San Jose. I think it’s the right way to do it, ”told San José Spotlight. “We want to make downtown San Jose a leading entertainment area.”
Mahan as well as the vice-mayor Pam Foley and the members of the Carl Salas council, Rosemary Kamei and Mulcahy added the street “Sharks Way” recently approved to the list of entertainment areas. City officials voted to rename the corner of St. John and boulevard N. Almaden in “Sharks Way” in honor of the NHNH team in San Jose who plays at the nearby SAP Center, also known as the Chark Tank.
While city officials have also met representatives of Santana Row, the shopping center has not been added to entertainment areas because private property is not eligible.
Bill 969 of the Senate, which entered into force on January 1, makes these areas possible.
“San Jose is about to be the third city in the state of California to establish new entertainment areas,” said Cultural Affairs Director Kerry Adams Hapner at the meeting. “When there is an evening of the FIFA World Cup watch in an entertainment area, you can buy something in a take -out container in a brick and mortar business, then return to the entertainment area to watch the big match on the big screen.”
