An investigation is underway after an electricity sub-station near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border was slaughtered early on Monday, overthrowing oil and leaving thousands in the dark.

The RCMP claims to have answered a call “linked to the firearm” during an ATCO substation in Lloydminster, a city straddling the provincial border.

They say that the installation was killed and that a ball struck an oil tank, eliminating the power to more than 2,500 residents for at least three hours and releasing about 20,000 liters of oil.

Preliminary estimates place the cost of damage and environmental cleaning at around 1.1 million dollars.

Police also investigate several break -in introductions that took place during the breakdown, but there is no evidence suggesting that they are linked.

An ATCO Energy spokesperson did not immediately send a request for comments.
