Some tenants of the building said they were wondering why the police and medico-legal vehicles were parked outside the building for almost two days.

The woman is expected to return to court on Thursday, although an audience for release under bail has not yet been planned.

Global News also learned that the woman was facing exceptional accusations concerning an incident almost two years ago. According to court documents, on April 1, 2023, the woman was accused of assault, mischief and assault with a weapon in relation to the child’s father.

A police spokesman said he had not proactively disclosed information because there was no risk to public security.

“This is a tragic incident involving a young child,” they said in a statement. “We have made the decision not to publish a press release because there was no risk to public security, no need for an investigation to request the public help, and the case is now in court.”
