BOULDER, Colorado – After almost five decades, the Boulder County Sheriff Office announced on Wednesday that it had collected “decisive evidence” which links a suspect to a murder of 1975.

On September 29, 1975, deputies were called in the 4500 block from North Broadway to Boulder for a deceased man’s report. When the deputies arrived, they found John Curtis Patterson, 20, a clerk at the waterfall station, died inside the toilets of the service station.

Patterson had been fatally stabbed in the chest, according to the sheriff’s office. The deputies also found two cartridges of caliber. 30 on the bathroom floor near the body of Patterson. The sheriff’s office said that the cartridges “wore extractor marks and indications of” light blows “on primers”.

The deputies found that the box recorded open and missing money, indicating the flight as the probable reason.

The sheriff’s office said that his investigation had conducted deputies to Louis Jess Locero, who was 32 at the time. He had criminals of flight, burglary, drugs and weapons, and stayed in a neighboring motel in Broadway block at the time of murder.

The investigators searched the Motel room in Locicero and found a m1 rifle firearm. 30 and a knife that corresponded to the injury of Patterson. The sheriff’s office said that the fibers of the Patterson shirt had been found on the knife and in the sheath, and the Patterson hairs were found on the boots of Locicero.

Locicero was interviewed and finally arrested in 1975. However, the Sheriff’s Office said that it had been “released for unknown reasons before the accusations.”

The detectives continued their investigation and followed the tracks over the decades, but could not develop new information until recently.

Using the Ballistic IQ apparatus, the detectives linked the cartridges found on the murder scene and the cartridges found in the Hotel Chamber of Locicero with the same firearm – the M1 rifle of caliber .30. The evidence was then sent to IQ evidence, which makes the IQ ballistics system, and the ballistics experts confirmed the results, according to the Sheriff’s office.

On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said that evidence concluding the weapon of Locicero with the crime scene.

Certain aspects of the case remain unconfirmed. However, the sheriff’s office considers that there is now “significant evidence to indicate that Locicero has committed the crime”. Locicero died in 2024, therefore, he cannot be accused of the crime.

The office of the District of Boulder’s county examined the case and “concluded that evidence establishes evidence beyond any reasonable doubt that Locicero committed the murder”. In a letter, the district prosecutor’s office said he thought Locicero was responsible for the flight and murder of Patterson.

In a press release, the detective Don Dillard said: “This is why the Boulder County Sheriff’s Bureau spends time investigating in cold cases like this, to see if something has been missed and to see if, with new technologies, new tracks can be found. The Boulder County Sheriff Bureau wants to know that their loved ones have not been forgotten.”

The district prosecutor of Boulder County, Michael Dougherty, also published a declaration, claiming: “In our court, we work in close collaboration with the police to ensure justice for the victims and our community. While this investigation by the Sheriff department demonstrates it, the quest for justice is something that we will pursue. This investigation, and with this new proof, we could have complained. “”
