A forest fire which broke out near the Redwater provincial leisure area in Sturgeon County, Alberta, burned on Sunday and local authorities urged residents to prepare any evacuations.
The fire increased from 110 hectares to around 388 hectares (or 959 acres) overnight, Uturgeon county officials said on Sunday, declaring a state of emergency to manage the “rapid evolution situation”.
Three helicopters of air fire fighting, supported by crews on the ground and air, were on the scene leading efforts to suppress fire in the area northeast of Edmonton, the county authorities announced.
The Alberta Forest Resources Branch was also sent to support local fire -fighting efforts, added Sturgeon County, saying that he had activated his emergency partnership with five neighboring counties to coordinate emergency intervention efforts.
All roads in the leisure area have been temporarily closed – open only to local traffic. So far, the fire has not crossed the northern Saskatchewan river.
The Albertans are also invited to stay away from the popular leisure area to give the emergency teams at work space.

Sturgeon’s county said that a house was lost in the fire. No victim has been reported, thanks to the rapid work of emergency teams on the scene, said the county.

“The main objectives of emergency intervention are the protection of goods in the region and the confinement of the fire. A number of animals, including a herd of cattle, have been moved,” added the county.
“We do not currently need volunteers or support for external agencies, and do not collect donations at the moment,” added Sturgeon County.
Residents of the region continue to be pending for emergency evacuations until further notice.

The county said that if an evacuation order was issued, residents must do the following:
- Leave the area immediately. “The departure of the emergency teams quickly helps keep the roads away from congestion and gives them room to do their job. Evacuation orders are issued when you must Leave the area for your own safety, “said the county.
- Take your emergency And take it with you.
- Gather important documents, medicines, food, fresh water and other supplies of which you will have to be far from the house for 72 hours (Emergency kit control list – Open government).
