Nevis ’25 named Arthur Ashe Jr. Wrestling Sports Scholar of the Year

Mawuli Nevis ’25, a graduate of the Wabash College Wabash, was appointed 2025 Arthur Ashe Jr. Wrestling Sports Scholar of the year by Various questions in higher education review.

Nevis, a major in biology in Cincinnati, is also semi-finalist for the sports scholarship holder of Arthur Ashe Jr., making him the second student-athlete of Wabash to obtain the national distinction of publication in the last three years. Reis Thomas ’23, was a finalist of the sports scholarship holder Arthur Ashe Jr. of the year in 2023.

Four-year-old vergator for the Wabash wrestling team, Nevis posted a career record of 70-42, including a bar from 23-14 in 2025. He qualified for the Championships for the fight of Division III of the NCAA in March at 165 pounds. “Despite the demanding temporal commitments of athletics, I have always made a priority to give back to those around me. Thanks to organizations like the Global Health Initiative / Organization of Public Health and my Fraternity, I had the opportunity to use my skills to serve both the Wabash campus and the wider community, “said Nevis. “Being a semi-finalist for this prize is a real honor. Nevis has held several leadership positions in his fraternity, Kappa Sigma. He is a member of Sons of Wabash, a group that promotes the advantages of philanthropy among students and former students. He helped collect funds for the construction of the American Legion Post 72 Memorial Park Park and planted bushes and flowers to help the park completion. Eagle Scout, he is a member of the Community Services Committee of Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies, which largely contributes to community awareness of the organization.

Also a semi-finalist for the sports scholarship holder Arthur Ashe Jr. of the year, Nevis qualified for the Championships of struggle of Division III of the NCAA in March at 165 pounds.He served for three years as a member of the Lockr Lab research team at Wabash College, where he heads Molecular Genetics Research in a laboratory funded by the National Science Foundation. Nevis is a member of the Wabash Global Health Initiative and served an internship in the summer of 2024 at the McGovern Medical School in Houston, Texas.

Since 1992, sports specialists Arthur Ashe Jr. have demonstrated a stellar sporting capacity and academic performance (3.5 cumulative GPA or more) in addition to a commitment to community service and student leadership. The price is inspired by the dedication of the legend of tennis Arthur Ashe Jr. to education as well as his love for the tennis game.

Nevis has been the 10th student-athlete of Wabash to be appointed Sports scholar Arthur Ashe Jr. since 2018.
