Ontario is warning dog owners in Windsor about a viral outbreak that has left more than a dozen dead.
The province’s animal welfare services said concerned dog owners should consult their veterinarian in the midst of a parvovirus The outbreak started in the city center, but likely spread further.
The outbreak has killed 14 dogs in the past two weeks and left 21 dogs sick or at risk of becoming sick. Animal Services took the surviving dogs to a place where they can be isolated and cared for.
The organization said it did not know how many dogs had been infected, which is why it issued the warning.
“Parvovirus can progress very quickly, so if you feel your pet has been affected or does not seem well, contact your family veterinarian as soon as possible to get the necessary treatment, as the chances of success are greater the longer “It’s detected early,” said Melanie Milczynski, chief animal welfare inspector.
The provincial animal welfare organization usually investigates cases of suspected cruelty, but its 24/7 emergency call center received numerous requests for help from the public starting on April 4 December, Milczynski said.
She said 65 dogs were vaccinated at a recent clinic and she plans to hold more clinics in conjunction with the Windsor-Essex Humane Society and the Hamilton-Burlington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

She said parvovirus can progress quickly without treatment, but it is also a preventable disease.
“The key information is to make sure your pets are up to date on their vaccinations because this is a preventable disease with very affordable vaccination,” Milczynski said.
She said it’s important to pick up dogs because feces are the main mode of transmission.
Unvaccinated dogs should also avoid playing with other dogs. Owners should keep their pets clean and avoid sharing dog bowls, toys and grooming tools.
