Huntsville, ala. (Sudden) – Hudsonalpha launched a pilot study to see how genetics and lifestyle influence a person’s risk to develop Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia.

The pilot study called Hope AD (healthy results thanks to phenomic explorations for Alzheimer’s disease) registered participants in the Smith Family Clinic for Genomic Medicine in Huntsville.

The study aims to register 200 healthy adults aged 65 to 75 who have a member of the nearby family (parent, brother or child) suffering from dementia but have no cognitive disorders themselves.

Officials claim that eligible participants will be invited to a first visit to the Smith Family Clinic, where they will undergo routine medical examinations, including cognitive tests and well-being assessments, as well as family history / medical history.

All eligible participants will receive clinical results, in particular:

  • APOE status – A well -known gene linked to the risk of Alzheimer’s
  • Polygenic risk score – An analysis that combines several genes to provide a more complete image of the risk of illness
  • PTAU217 protein levels – a brain protein, or “biomarker”, known to be high in early Alzheimer’s disease

“Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias begin years before symptoms appear, so waiting for someone to show signs of memory can be too late,” said Nick Cochran, PHD, researcher of the Hudsonalpha teacher and principal researcher at Hudsonalpha on the study. “This project is a chance to move from reaction to prevention. We explore whether to give people personalized health information can allow them to make changes that protect brain health. ”

The organizers said that the study uses a “phenomic” approach, capturing very detailed data on the health, environment and lifestyle of participants. They added that it helps researchers paint a more complete table of the risk of dementia than genetics alone.

The pilot’s results will light up a more in -depth study in the coming years.
