Women leaders in sport go to Falk College in March 2025.

During a recent visit to the Falk College, the women leaders of the PDG of Sport Patti Phillips (rear row, Middle with Red Jacket) met university students from Syracuse from Falk College and the Newhouse School.

One of the many advantages of the new partnership between Women Leaders in Sport And the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics is mentoring that the leaders of sports leaders provide students Falk.

This advantage was recently exhibited at Falk College, where women leaders of the Director General of Sport Patti Phillips and strategy director and operation Christina Turner metli’s students have met for a networking and professional development session and organized a lunch meeting with students from Falk and the Newhouse School of Public Communications.

We asked students of the Falk College Emily Gilbert, Lexi Katz and Allison Vims to share what they learned from Phillips and Turner during the lunch session, and here is what they wrote:

Emily Gilbert ’27 (major in sports management, minor in political science)

“Meet Christina and Patti was a wonderful experience, and learn more about their professional trips and how they arrived where they are now.

“I asked Patti why she came to Syracuse and how the new partnership would be beneficial for the students, and her answer resonated with me. She said their organization was a hub for women to meet other women and acquire valuable skills that will help develop their careers.

“Patti also explained how they will tell us the truth about industry. She said that entering the industry is not easy and sometimes putting work is not enough. There will be times when you will be overlooked, but the women leaders of the sports organization are there to help us.

Emily Gilbert is the president of awareness-raising and collection of community funds for Women In Sports and Events Club (WISE), vice-president of the Community Service for Sport Management Club and Vice-President of the Philanthropy of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.

Lexi Katz ’27 (Sports management major, Spanish minor)

“I was fortunate to have the opportunity to meet Patti Phillips and Christina Turner and they shared precious ideas on how to be a woman prosperous in sports and enter the competitive industry. I appreciated hearing their networking and interview advice such as doing a good first impression, how to support others in different organizations.

The major in management of the sport Lexi Katz (in a striped sweater) says that it hopes that “more students learn the partnership (with the women leaders of the sport) and use their network to find other opportunities.”

“A precious conversation that we had was of the importance of having a state of growth. If you want to grow and progress in the industry, you have to try new things and push yourself while being detailed and being proud to do little things.

“We also discussed the partnership between Falk and Women Leaders in sport and I mentioned how grateful we are to have a dean like Jeremy Jordan, who recognizes the lack of support for women in sport and encourages us to take advantage of our foot in any way possible.”

Lexi Katz is the President of Communications of Women In Sports and Events Club (WISE), a member of the sport management club and a two -year member of the inventory team for the Sports Charitable Auction for Sport Management Club.

Allison VIMS ’27 (Sports management major, double minor in business and Spanish)

“The discussion of my table was led by Patti Phillips, which asked each of us to individually share our objectives and our leadership aspirations. Patti took the time to know us as an individual and encouraged us to understand that she could help us.

“During our lunch, my participating colleagues and I started to share stories of our difficulties and our success stories in the industry. Patti listened to first, then broken down scenarios and different ways to attack each situation to make sure that we keep our seats at the table. The women leaders of the sports team put an end to lunch with the feeling of leading, because we, as a student, are the future of the sports industry. I left lunch by feeling a feeling of allowing to impose.

“Before this lunch, I knew that the partnership would make Falk College stand out from other sports management programs, but I have not seen how students would be involved. However, being able to ask the CEO his opinions and have the opportunity to share my contribution as a student leader helped me see how the partnership will benefit students.

Allison Vilms is president of Women In Sports and Events Club (WISE) and Vice-President of the Programming of Sport Management Club.

Pioneer partnership

Announced in August 2024The partnership between Women Leaders In Sports and Falk College and was inspired after the CEO of Women of Sports, Patti Phillips on campus, welcomed women leaders from Syracuse University.

The partnership creates possibilities of mentorship, apprenticeship, scholarship, internship and membership for Falk students, gives access to professional subscriptions to Falk teachers and supports teachers attended during important events such as women leaders of the National Sports Convention. In October, a contingent of students, teachers and Falk College personnel attended the women in sports in sports 2024 National Convention in Baltimore, Maryland.

As part of the collaboration, Phillips is a special advisor at the Dean Jordan of Falk College Jeremy Jordan and “Executive in residence” in Falk. The partnership also calls for an exchange of relevant research from the University of Syracuse and co-creating a scholarship for women in sports.
