When you scroll through social media, you may have recently seen friends and family appear in miniature.
This is part of a new trend where people use generative tools of artificial intelligence (IA) like Chatgpt and Copilot to fill – literally – like pocket dolls and action figurines.
He took off online, with brands and influencers who rushed in the creation of their Mini-moi.
But some urge people to avoid the apparently innocent trend, to say that the fear of missing should not exceed the concerns about the energy and the use of AI data.
How does the AI doll generator work?
It may seem complicated, but the process is simple.
People download an image of themselves on a tool like Chatgpt, as well as written prompts that explain what they want the final image to be related.
These instructions are really important.
They say to the tool IA all that he is supposed to generate, from the articles with which a person wants to appear to the type of packaging in which he should be – which includes the imitation of the box and the police of popular toys like Barbie.
Allow Instagram content?
Many online will then customize it with their names, work and clothing choices.
Although this does not always work, and many have also shared some of the funny errors that the tools have committed, where the action dolls do not look like them.
Like the other generative tools of AI, image generators are also inclined to invent things and can make hypotheses about someone’s appearance.
And it is not only ordinary people who use it – the trend has been seized by a wealth of online brands, including the beauty company Mario Badescu and even Royal Mail.
Allow Twitter content?
What is the call?
Trends come and go – but by their very nature, people can make people forced to participate to avoid missing.
“The generative AI facilitates and faster for people to create and jump on trends,” explains Jasmine Enberg, the main social media analyst at Emarketer.
She said technology has facilitated faster and easier online content creation, which can have the unexpected effect to accelerate the pace to which other social media users are annoyed.
But she thinks that AI trends will become a more regular appearance on our flows “because technology becomes a more regular part of our digital life”.
What are the big concerns?
But while its mild nature may have attracted people, the trend has aroused criticism from certain concerned about its environmental impact.
Professor Gina Neff by Queen Mary University London said that the BBC Chatgpt “burns energy”, and that the data centers used to feed it consume more electricity in a year than 117 countries.
“We have a joke in my house that each time we create one of these memes of AI, he kills a tree,” said Lance Ulanoff, editor -in -chief of Techradar, In an article on the trend.
“It is the hyperbola, of course, but it is sure to say that the generation of content of AI is not without cost, and perhaps we should think of it and use it differently.”
People have also highlighted the concerns that copyright protected data may have been used to create technology that generates images without paying for this.
“Chatgpt Barbie represents a triple threat to our private life, our culture and our planet,” said Ms. Neff.
“Although customization can feel good, these systems put marks and characters in a mixer without any responsibility for the emerging slope.”
And Jo Bromilow, director of Socials and influencers of the PR and the creative agency MSL UK, asks: “Does a cute and funny result are really worth it?”
“If we really want to use AI correctly, we have to define railing about how we use it conscientiously,” she said.
Test the AI doll trend
By Zoe Kleinman, BBC technology publisher
I started by finding a suggested online prompt – a list of instructions to enter the AI tool in order to generate the image.
You must download your own selfie with your prompt and you must also be very specific to what you want, including a list of accessories you want included and the color you want the box to be.

Regarding the supply of my job title, my first attempt was refused because I included BBC News and I was told that this viole content policy – I think that BBC does not allow Chatgpt to use its outing.
Once you get an image, you will probably want to change it more; My first attempt was too much like a cartoon.
The following, more realistic version, made me look considerably older than me, then too childish, and I abandoned at the end by trying to make it use my real eye color, which continued in the absence in blue (mine are a mixture of hazelnut and green).
It took a few minutes to generate each version and overall, the process was slower than I would have liked, potentially because of its popularity.
It has started to feel a lot of work for a passing trend, and it is not perfect – my doll develops far under the supposed packaging.
But more importantly, somewhere in a data center, some hot computers were cut to make the action Figure Zoe.
They could certainly have been put to work on more worthy causes.
