Leitchfield, Ky. (WBKO) – Matt Small, local business owner and the county of Grayson county, went to a volunteer role to help his neighbors in the result of devastating floods. Small, known for his work on water, played a crucial role in the preparation and rescue of people affected by rising waters.
“We already had higher water levels than usual, and we knew that when he was raining, things were going to fill up quickly,” said Small. “We started preparing early, publishing on Facebook Live and helping people secure their quays by attaching them to trees.”
While the water level continued to increase, Small and his team entered action, helping people blocked at home.
“Many people were stuck on their islands or in their homes, and some did not expect to be surrounded by water for so long. We helped the grocery store, collect medication and even take people to medical appointments. ”
The situation was made more difficult by the geography of the region. “Many of these places are a way and in a way to go out. If the roads flood, people are stuck, and unless they have boats or kayaks, they are blocked,” said Small.
Small’s military history helped him plan and execute rescues.
“Before leaving, we make sure that we have vests of life, strings and disposable devices on board,” he shared. “We are still working as a team, especially when there are debris in water, and we plan unforeseen challenges.”
In addition to the challenges of flood waters, Small noted the unexpected presence of fauna, including snakes and rodents in search of shelter. “It is a concern for people living in affected areas, especially since animals come out of the woodwork,” said Small.
Despite overwhelming challenges, Small stressed the importance of community support during such a crisis. “It was rewarding to see the community come together, the neighbors helping themselves,” he said.
While flood waters are starting to back away, Small and his team continue to help those who need it, presenting the resilience and the spirit of the residents of the county of Grayson.
