Commercial operations benefit the Spokane river

Capturing pollutants before reaching the wastewater system is essential to protect people, infrastructure and the environment. Each year, City of Spokane recognizes companies and organizations that favor operations to protect the Spokane river by excelling in the management of their wastewater. The following elements obtained compliance with 100% of requirements in industrial wastewater discharge permits for 2024:

  • Darigold, Inc.
  • Jubilant holpaper
  • Selkirk Pharma, Inc.
  • Fairchild Air Force Base
  • Goodrich Corporation

Companies must have industrial waste permits, either because they produce a large volume of wastewater, or because they have the potential for the flow of pollutants that can disrupt wastewater processing processes. The city is actively working with companies and other organizations to prevent harmful or harmful substances from being unloaded in the sewer system. The city treated around 33 million gallons of wastewater per day in its re -statement of riverside Park water in 2024.

“Excellent wastewater management takes teamwork between our public systems and private users,” explains Marlene Feist, director of public works. “Be able to recognize the companies that engage in the same objective send a healthy message to our community.”

When companies meet all their permit requirements, this helps protect the community from backup of sewers and toxic or explosive smoke in the collection system. It also helps to protect the integrity of the sanitary sewer by ensuring that corrosive materials are not released. Compliance protects the biological processes of the processing plant and prevents the passage of unretable pollutants in the Spokane river. When companies comply with the limits of pollutants in their license, it also guarantees that the biosolids generated in the wastewater treatment plant meet all the requirements for land application.
