The first full week of April begins with more rain in the forecasts in what should be a cold week in the old ball field for the baseball and softball teams WPIAL.
The two most dominant softball programs in the WPIAL 6A class in the past decade is expected to compete for the first of the two regular season games on Monday.
However, this would not surprise anyone if these powers meet in the playoffs.
First place in class 6a is at stake when Hempfield welcomes the Seneca valley at 4 p.m.
Apart from Bethel Park, winning everything in 2021, these two won the Wpial Soltablablat in the highest class of the season since 2015.
The Spartans won five consecutive titles between 2015-19, then captured gold again in 2023.
Raiders are reigning champions and have won two of the last three crowns.
Over the past three years, these two behemoths have collided on softball diamond eight times.
Each team has won four games and is 1-1 against each other in the playoffs.
Seneca Valley won in the semi-finals in 2022 en route to a district crown, and Hempfield won a force for gold in the 2023 final.
Last season, the Raiders won the first 2-0 game, while the Spartans rebounded importantly to win the Revenge 15-2 match.
Finally, the Play section
There are three wpial softball sections that have not yet had a single section match until Monday. Time allows it, of course.
One of them is section 3-5A. The game program to open the Play section includes:
Upper St. Clair (5-0) in Montour (2-3) at 4 p.m.
South Fayette (5-2) at Chartiers Valley (2-3) at 3.30 p.m.
West Allegheny (4-3) in Moon (2-2) at 3.30 p.m.
Here are the operators of the section in section 1-3a:
Mt. Pleasant (2-3) in Burrell (4-3) at 4.30 p.m.
Southmoreland (2-2) in Ligonier Valley (0-5) at 5.30 p.m.
Yough (2-2) at Deer Lakes (2-5) at 4 p.m.
Finally, the lids of section 4-2A:
Washington (4-0) in California (2-2) at 4:30 p.m.
Frazier (3-1) in Bentworth (3-3) at 4:15 p.m.
Waynesburg Central (3-3) in Brownsville (3-2) at 4 p.m.
North fights
A year ago, the Baseball Butler team finished in fourth place in section 1-6A at five teams and was laundered in the quarter-finals by Mont in the lead Lebanon, 5-0, to finish the season with a record of 6-14.
While they are preparing for their second section series of the season, the Tornado of Gold has already equaled its total victory last spring with a perfect brand of 6-0.
However, the real test occurs while Butler opens a series of three games against the title champion Wpial North Allegheny Monday in Pullman Park in Butler at 3.30 p.m.
Freshly out of a North Hills sweep last week, the golden tornado is 3-0 and alone in first place in the section.
This is the opening of the Tigers section after dividing four games of non-section. Na won two consecutive victories with the victories last week against Mount Lebanon and Plum, which followed the opening defeats of the season against Pine-Richland and Norwin.
Over the past two seasons, North Allegheny has won five of the six section games against Butler.
The Tigers outstripped the Tornado of Gold in the five victories, 42-13.
The last victory for Butler over North Algheny was April 14, 2023, 5-2.
There are three other WPIAL Class 6a Baseball section series which should start on Monday.
Elsewhere in section 1-6A, North Hills (0-3, 2-6) faces the central Catholic (1-2, 4-2) at the Russelton Undersaison complex at 3:45 p.m.
In section 2-6A, Mont Leban (0-0, 1-6) fights against Hempfield (2-1, 4-4) at 4:15 p.m., and Norwin (1-2, 3-5) Canon-McMillan visit (3-0, 7-1) at 4 p.m.
DECS are wild
For a key baseball series in section 2 of class 2A, why not play two?
It is a crowded summit in this section with four teams separated by a single match in the loss column.
Two of these teams decided to take advantage of the lawn and play two when freedom visits Neshannock.
Bulldogs are 2-1 in the section and 3-3 in total, after losing two rights after three consecutive victories.
The throws have divided their only series of sections so far with Laurel after winning their three non-section competitions.
Freedom has a home section makeup match against New Brighton, scheduled for this next Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs Match 1 of Launch should start at 4:30 p.m. with the next game next around 6:45 p.m. around 6:45 p.m.
