Alpena – The Temple of Alpena Sports Fame announces the Hockey Champion Hockey team High School as a team of the year.
The Wildcats went 17-9-2 this season on the way to win the third state championship of the program. The team will be honored during the 40th annual machine of the Temple of Fame of Sports and Annual Dinner of the Temple Sports of Sports Fame on June 7.

The Alpena championship in 1993 – his third under the coach of the Tony Byrs renowned temple – intervened after a eliminatory miracle by a working team that few people saw coming. After a regular season from top to bottom, the Wildcats caught fire in the playoff series to run. They defeated the familiar enemies SCANABA (6-5), Marquette (7-1) and Midland (5-2) in the regional, then beat East Kentwood in the quarter-finals, 3-1. In the semi-finals, the Wildcats beat Grand Blanc 4-1 to set up a league match confrontation with Detroit Redford Catholic Central. In a highly contested match, Alpena prevailed 2-1 to win her third state championship. Alpena has overcome a 1-0 deficit in the championship match with two third period goals, including the game winner of Mike Richey, who buried a rebound for the goal.
Alpena’s race was highlighted by a stellar goalkeeper from Jeremy Sims, who only granted three goals on the last three games of the Alpena qualifiers on the path of an honorable mention of all states. Brian Stibitz was also honored with the M. Hockey prize for an out -of -competition season.
Members of the Alpena State Championship team in 1993 include: Andy Becker, Craig Carpenter, Cory Curtis, John Grzeskowiak, Bob Hamp, Jason Kierst, Chad McConnell, Eric Rapke, Chris Repke, Mike Richey, JP Ritter, Pat Rupp, Bill Sanderson, Greg Silver, Jeremy Simss, Brian Sticitz, Jon Sylevers Jeff Warholik, Travis Weide, Jeff Wilson, Mike Wojt, manager Tim Sylvester, assistant coaches Tom Sommerfeld and Jim Eller, and head coach Tony Byrs.
