Lexington, Virginie – VMI Swimming & Diving had three representatives appointed to the university teams of all the districts of the Community Sports College announced Tuesday by the SCC office.
The academic teams of swimming and diving of all the academic districts, selected by College Sports Communicors, recognize the best student-athletes in the country for their performance combined in the swimming pool and in class. The appointment requirements include a second year or more academic status, a minimum of 3.50 cumulative GPA and, in swimming and diving, students-athletes must participate in five competitions or finish the first eight during a conference competition.
VMI representative are second year students Sam castle And Matthew Picard and junior Valerie Tonnu. The three Keydets set up large figures in the swimming pool and the classroom, because each member had a GPA of 3.70 or more, played in at least six games and placed in the first eight at least once in the conference championships.
Castle, a major mechanical engineering, was the best VMI swimmer in the back, recording the best times in 100 and 200 backs, winning first place six times, and was the highest of each race. The native of Mechanicsville, Virginia, native of three team records and four relay records at the America East Championships.
Picard, a major mechanical engineering, excelled in freestyle, winning four first -class brands in the 50, 100 and 200 m free as well as the placement in the first three of each race. The MT. Pleasant, in South Carolina, native broke the record of the 100 free team and four relay records at the America East Championships.
During the America East championships, Castle caught the money in the 100 back just before Picard won bronze in the 100 free. The two Keydets also played a key role in the 800 Freestyle Relay Squad which ranked third. Castle and Picard were appointed America East All-Academic only a few weeks before obtaining another academic honor.
Tonnu, a major in civil engineering, participated in six games for Keydets between the 50 and 1,000 m free, including the 400 and 800 free relays. The native of Center -Ville, in Virginia, ranked in the first five four times. During the America East championships, Tonnu ran to 800 Freestyle Relay with the 50, 100 and 200 m free.
